I contracted with Larry’s company to demo an old wooden deck and build a much larger composite deck with a screen porch to match the look of my house. Larry and his workers are very friendly, courteous and easy to work with. Larry’s builder Kirk is very knowledgeable and skilled in his trade. I drew the original designs for the deck and porch, and Kirk helped me bring it to fruition with design and structural recommendations. This build was tricky due to the shape of the hip roof and roofline, but his ability to visualize what he needed to do and his engineering to accomplish it were solid. Kirk matched the soffit, cladding and trim of my house to finish-off the roofline of the new screen porch, and it looks almost like it was an original part of the house! Larry worked with me on which materials we should use for this project, from the decking to the railing, and the type of screen doors. He offered me options from his suppliers and let me pick which materials I wanted to use. My own research had found a certain brand and type of screen I wanted to use, and Larry sourced that without any problem. When it came to the screen porch doors, we tried the typical flappy porch door, but after one was installed, Larry asked me if I really liked it, because he thought I would end up not happy with it. He was right—it looked flimsy and would have sagged over time, like a lot of screen porches I’ve seen. So he recommended storm doors, and we got two Andersons put in, and they look superb and shut tightly. Because I live in the city and wanted to make sure this investment in my house would not be a problem when it comes time to sell, I asked Larry about permitting, and he said he’d take care of filing the requisite permits, which was good to hear as I had no experience in how to do that. The city inspector only added one structure design change before the porch roof construction began, but otherwise all of Kirk’s work easily passed muster. The only thing I would like to add to this review, and why it is not 5 stars, is that the work area was not kept as clean as I would have liked it to be, and the new Trex decking got really dirty and took some beating while the crew worked on everything else. There were some details that were overlooked that I had to point out. Maybe it’s the nature of construction and roof work, but there were nails all over the surrounding ground and in-between the deck boards that I had to pick up almost daily (a magnet surely helps!). I am, overall, very happy with the new Trex deck and screen porch Larry’s crew built. It took much longer than I thought it would (deposit paid in July, completion mid-January), but the guys worked hard and consistently, from the heat of summer through the cold and even snow of early January. I can’t wait for the coming warm spring days to really enjoy it!
