About
I have worked with numerous students who have moved on to great things in their own music careers. I'm proud to say that many of my students have won vocal competitions, gone on to be professional musicians, teachers and performers. A former student teaches in the most prestigious private schools in SC where his choirs tour throughout the world most recently the Vatican. Another student is singing in her tenth Broadway show/musical in New York City. She was nominate for a Tony Award in 2017 for her role in "Come From Away". If you're in New York City, you should check her performances out. Several other students have gone on to be music educators and performers on every level.
I've had great success helping young and not so young :-) men, women, boys and girls pursue their dreams in music. I can help you, as well.
I love experiencing the process of learning with my students. My passion is to see and hear improvement in the voices and on the piano and see the look of pride and accomplishment on your face.

I'll give Garry full stars for his patience! I had never taken any musiclessons, but at 28 I decided I really wanted to learn to play an instrument. Piano sounded great and I'm really glad I found Garry because learning to read and play music is something that doesn't come naturally. He has so much patience and really takes the time to explain the way everything works (even if I'm not totally getting all the musictheory:)) When I get frustrated I take a step back and appreciate that a few months ago I knew basically nothing about music but now I am reading music (albeit slowly) and playing songs, which is just wonderful. He is really understanding the way I learn best and trying to work with it. We have had a couple of scheduling mix -ups but life happens and he always makes sure I get my lessons. I also like that I can do lessons at his studio and I know other students also do home visits, he really tries to work with people. If you are looking for a music teacher, Garry is great, give him a call:)

During my working years I was always saying "When I retire I'm going to take piano and musictheory." Well it's that time and I saw Garry on Thumbtack and contacted him. So glad I did!
Garry is very patient and understanding. He has a knack for making lessons fun. The materials are tailored for the older beginner - and lesson scheduling is very accommodating.
I'm so happy I started lessons - humbling, frustrating (in a good way!), and exhilarating. Keeps me busy and the mind and fingers engaged. And you also think about all your favorite music in new ways.
If you've been thinking about it - call Garry!

Mr. Hanna has been teaching my 5-yr old boy for almost 2 months now. Everything has been wonderful and more than what I had once expected. Mr. Hanna manages to keep my son motivated in learning piano. He is very patient and adjusts his paces to keep the 5-yr old interested and focused throughout the 1-hr lesson every week. My son also loves practicing piano almost on a daily basis, on top of his heavy homework load and other activities. We are hopeful that piano would become one of my son's life-long interests and hobbies. Thanks to Mr. Hanna for a great start!!

Garry is a very passionate and patient piano teacher. He was the only teacher who responded to my Thumbtack request to teach my 5 year old and the lessons are going very well. My 5 year old loves piano lessons, he is able to practice 15-30 min a day and has improved remarkably in the few short weeks that we have been going to Garry's studio for lessons. I highly recommend Garry as a piano teacher!

FAQs
What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?
1. My baseline teaching fee is $50.00 for one hour lesson per week. Payment for services is expected in advance on the last lesson of the month for the next month.
2. If the teacher needs to reschedule a lesson, it will be rescheduled within the week, if possible. If schedules do not permit rescheduling a lesson, the fee for the missed lesson will be reimbursed.
3. Thirty minute lessons can be taught and are encouraged for younger students. Thirty minute lesson fee is $35.00/1/2 Hr.
4. A 24 hour notice is required if you must miss a lesson. "No shows" will not be refunded or rescheduled.
Of course, each situation is different and I do consider the circumstances for each. Let's discuss.
What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
This varies so widely based on the individual student. I always start with basic breathing techniques. Going forward, while staying focused on breathing, we will add vocal production with vocalise and songs as a tool.
For piano students I usually use specific proven piano series. For children I have a few children's series and there are also series designed towards the adult that I use. Students are also encouraged to create or bring in repertoire of their choosing.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a bachelor degree in Music Education/Choral Conducting/Vocal Performance and graduate level in Vocal Performance/Choral Conducting. I continue my personal voice lessons even today.
