We hired Mario and his helper to uninstall/reinstall bathroom tile around our combo tub/shower. He provided an estimate that we agreed to which appeared reasonable at first. The following day he asked for a different amount and expected the rate he provided for himself and his helper to be the same, even though this can very easily be a 1 man job. I ended up paying him a daily rate instead based on the work completed. This is where the stalling wasting time and dishonestly came into play. The rate was not $25 an hour as falsely advertised on here, it was actually doubled because he has a helper doing most of the work. It took 5 days to uninstal and reinstall hardi back, sheetrock, and old tile removed around the tub area. The installation of the hardi was all uneven as well and a double layer had to be put back on, which I went to pick up. As soon as you walk in the door, you can see everything unleveled/uneven. The plumber we hired from Thumbtack was awesome and physically communicated with Mario specifically to install only to a certain point for him to complete his job and that didn't happen. It was covered up with hardi anyway like the conversation never happened. The work ended up having to be doubled and corrected on the whole back wall. On the 2nd day, my husband asked Mario if they were on another job, which he stated, "No" and it turned out that was a lie. One of the reviews on here, you can clearly see he was on another job and his helper was telling me they needed to complete another concrete job. All 5 days they were late. One day, Mario litterally worked 2 hours taking off a small section of tile that should have already been completed on day 1 or 2, then left while I was at Home Depot ordering a bathtub. Another day, I waited over 5 hours from 12:00 noon until 5:30pm for him to arrive. The text messages he kept lying about the time as well. He text message me only, would never answer the cell phone and did not call me back, not once in those 5 days! only text also saying his phone wasn't working, then telling me he didn't like texting either, even though his helper had a phone for him to use for communication. It was extremely unprofessional and very frustrating. This guy is a chronic liar, did not have his own tools either, that was the worse part. The helper was litterally cutting the hardi in my front driveway on the concrete ground with a box cutter and my husband and I loaned them tools. I did not know this until my mother thought that was odd and brought it to my attention. They never cleaned up left a horrible mess all over the front driveway that I cleaned up and the restroom I had to step in cover up our sinks, countertops, toilet, and floors. I requested this from the begining but it was like the conversation never happened. All the material were provided for job and they did not have to make any trips to the store for anything, except 1 time to purchase a tool on the 1st day, which told me he wasn't even prepared to do the job. The helper finally asked me to rent a tile cutter for the preparation and installiation of the tile, then Mario had him call me and message me that he wanted more money for correction their mistake with the hardi, so they didn't like having to fix the mistake and felt I should give them more money that day. The helper asked for more money, not Mario because the helper was the one doing most of the work. He asked for $200 each for that day. That was the 5th day. The last day, next morning, I decided not to order the tool the helper asked for, until I was sure they were coming beause not 1 day did they come at the time Mario stated; it was always more than 2-5 hours after. If Mario didn't like me asking him to please be specific about the completion of the job and the time they were coming, he would tell me they wouldn't be coming the next day, so I that I can do whatever I neeeded to do as the excuse for not coming to work. I was unable to manage my responsiblities because they were so unreliable and inconsistant. Mario did not have his own transportation either, the helper was using his vehicle for them. Had I orderd the tool on that last day, I would have been charged for a full day out more money. That last day, I was told they would be there at 8am which would have been the earliest, the later way past 8am, I receieved a text message from the helper stating they wouldn't be coming anymore at all. I never received a call or communication from Mario. Initially, I was told the job would be completed in 2-3 days. 1 to uninstall; 1 to install; and 1 for tile install. I have received a few estimates and the contractors stated this was a 1-2 day 1 man job, only because the tub ordered would need to be set in first, so the 2nd day would be the installing of the tile around the tub. I would not have had any problem paying Mario and his helper had he been honest, skilled as he stated he was at this type of job, and dependable. This contractor was a waste of time and money, and I would not trust or recomend him to anyone. We have several other projects including a conctrete job that my husband and I were offering them at the beginning until this horrible experience occurred.
