Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost for a family law attorney?

If you want to hire a family law attorney, keep in mind the average hourly rate ranges from $150 to $350 per hour. However, not all lawyers charge by the hour. When contacting family law attorneys near you, ask to receive cost estimates and an overview of all their fees.

How do I hire a good family law attorney?

If you want to ensure you hire the best family law attorney for your case, be diligent when researching. Compare lawyers near you, read their client reviews and get familiar with their track record. Remember that all family law attorneys must be licensed to practice law.

The last step is to contact several different attorneys to set up consultations, determine whether it’s a good fit and get cost estimates.

Do family law attorneys handle divorce?

Yes, many family law attorneys handle divorce. They also handle a number of other divorce-related issues, including legal separations and child custody cases. Family law attorneys can help clients handle guardianship, establishing paternity, visitation rights, child support, extended family custody terms and other issues important to your family.

What does a family law attorney do?

A family law attorney specializes in areas like divorce, child custody and guardianship. This can include working on cases that involve visitation rights, parental responsibility, child support, conflicts between parents and custody matters with the extended family.

How do lawyers get paid if they lose a case?

Lawyers typically charge for their time (typically a hourly rate) regardless of whether they win a case. Sometimes, the losing party is ordered to pay the other party’s lawyer fees on top of their own. Some lawyers also work on contingency, meaning they will take a percentage of the awarded amount only if they successfully win the case.

Before hiring a lawyer, make sure you understand their fee structure.

Reviews for Austin family law attorneys

After years of dealing with the same attorney, with no resolution, I decided it was time for a massive change in action. I looked and researched several family/custody attorneys in Austin. The one, and only one that even stood out enough for me to contact, was Kimberly at the Law Office of Kleinhans Gruber. I have been a single mom to my daughter since she was born 9 years ago. My previous attorney was no help after years of representation, he just kept padding his wallet wanting to take the easy way out. That translated into more trauma for my daughter and myself. Kimberly and her team took action straight away, and she was able to help me with payment plans for my option, since I don't have a second income. Having had a child with a previous background in verbal and physical violence, has been a difficult journey, as I don't want the cycle to repeat itself with my daughter. Kim and her team treat me like a person, not just another client. She is extremely professional, and I will never use any one in Texas as an attorney, other than Kim and her team. I can't begin to tell you how much relief I have had, even in the first 2 weeks of her representation. She is efficient, return calls or emails are always done in 24 hours. That is something I have never experienced before. If all law offices had the integrity and care Kim and her team put into each client as they have me, the world of law and domestic situations would be more fairly and easily resolved. I highly recommend her services if you want professionalism at the highest level, and not to be treated as just another client. I am a testament to the work they have put so diligently in for my daughter and myself.

I was involved in a very contentious custody disagreement and needed an attorney quickly, I reached out to several law firms on Thumbtack but was having a hard time connecting with anyone. I made an appointment with The Law Office of Kleinhans Gruber and from my first consultation with Keith Kleinhans, I felt at ease and confident going into the battle ahead. Keith was honest, upfront and informative about what my expectations should be as we proceeded into the custody suit. My case was a little out of the ordinary in that my ex immediately filed a geographic restriction on myself and our son because I was hoping to move from Austin (where my son has lived since birth) to my hometown College Station; so we had to quickly prepare for a temporary hearing. After hiring Keinhans Gruber, I met with Kim Kleinhans to prepare for my temporary hearing and she made me feel so at ease, honestly she felt like part of my family. Temporary hearings really don't give you any time to prepare but Kim drilled down on every detail to help my case, I knew it was a long shot but going into court, I felt hopeful. Kim's representation in court made the opposing counsel look ill prepared and ridiculous, she was professional and detail oriented the entire hearing. The judge granted in my favor and I got to move home! I can not say enough about this team of attorneys, they provided incredible support in one of the most difficult times of my life. Kim and Keith have definitely found a client for life! Thank you guys!
