Introduction: Tired of s t a r i n g at your essay, manuscript, web copy, or personal statement until you’re blue, wondering what you have to do to make it *P*O*P* ? Looking for someone to polish your dissertation or write your report in more academic language? Look no further! As a freelance writer and editor, I edit and (re)write for authors and doctoral candidates who need a second pair of eyes before publishing, and entrepreneurs who need support in the written aspects of business. With a strong background in teaching both English and foreign language, I also offer targeted support to bilingual clients writing in their second language. As a linguist, I am meticulous about all the mechanics of grammar, spelling, punctuation, verb tense and agreement, and effective word choice. I have a sharp eye for detail and pay special attention to the nuances of language and idiomatic expression. These skills have served me well as a copy-editor. But truth be told, after taking on a wide variety of writing and editing projects over the last five years, I’ve discovered that my sweet spot is three-fold: tightening dissertations, polishing manuscripts, and embellishing personal statements. I’m a very hands-on editor. From our first contact, I do my best to be generous with my time, to be thorough in my work on your documents, and to keep all communication productive and open. First, I ‘crawl into your head’ to listen for your voice and to understand your purpose, your message, and your target readership. When working in non-fiction, I often take the initiative to fact-check or add notes of interest in the margins. When working in fiction, I welcome the chance to enhance your descriptive passages or to deepen your character development. As I invest myself in your story, I occasionally come across a passage that begs to be developed a bit further. If you give me the green light, I’ll extend the narrative as I invite the reader to linger in a moment that is pivotal to the arc of your story. Then after I do my thing and send you the edited version, I meet with you on Skype to review and tweak until you are happy with the results! Here are a few scenarios which match projects that I’ve tackled in the last few years: Scenario 1: Your story is beautifully written; your purpose and message are clear. But you question your character development, thought sequences, and dialogue. And you wonder: “What can I do to make those thorny descriptive passages *sing*?” Scenario 2: You are a master at writing essays that are informative and compelling. Still, you sense that something is ‘off.’ Do you need help with the structure of your piece or ‘connective tissue’ such as strong topical sentences and transitional phrases? Scenario 3: You love big words and long, elaborate sentences. But truth be told, you know you tend to run on and get wordy. Or passive voice has become your guilty pleasure. Reluctantly, you admit that you need someone to chop those sentences, distill your ideas, and set those verbs straight. Scenario 4: You’ve filled your personal statement with your achievements, but you aren’t sure it is enough to make you stand out in a field of qualified applicants. How can you make it more compelling? Scenario 5: English is your second language, so writing in English does not come easily to you. You puzzle over verb tense, idiomatic expression, and effective word choice. And what the heck is correct syntax? And why is it important? Help! Regardless of your situation, here’s a dirty little secret: Even successful authors have to check their punctuation and spelling, question their verbs, and wonder when it’s ok to ditch formal language for something more colloquial. That’s why God made editors ! ! Help is on the way ! As I have mentioned, I love helping those who are writing in their second language to untangle the wording and nail the right tone. I grew up abroad and have been a serious student of other languages all my life, so I understand the unique challenges of writing in a second language—I’ve had to do it myself! My international clients find that this background gives me an edge as their editor. I have a knack for understanding the intended meaning behind your words so that we can find a way to express things more effectively. Whether I am polishing your web-copy to highlight your brand, sharpening the impact of your dissertation, or drawing your readers deeper into your novel, my top priority as your editor is to keep your purpose, your message, and your readership in view. With each of these elements in mind, I listen for your ‘voice’ and quickly catch the vision for the potential impact of your words. At the same time, I note weaknesses that may be compromising your effectiveness. This gives us a place to start as I bring new integrity to your work. In short, My Mission Is to Craft Your Message. So, what do you say? Will you trust me with your words? Pat Stainke The Language Delegate My Mission: To Craft Your Message

Pat did an amazing job at editing my book! I felt as if were friends and she was there while telling my story. My manuscript came alive and took me back to the place I was writing about! An amazing experience!

Working with Pat was an amazing experience! We started off with a phone call which lasted 45 minutes, just discussing my manuscript and getting to know one another so we'd be on the same page, literally. She understood my tone in the book and knew how to edit without losing it. Her edits showed that she was well-prepared, creative, understanding, that she has a great sense of language, and that she has a wonderful understanding of mechanics and structure. My favorite part about working with Pat is her empathy. She really cares about me and that shone through in her work. I definitely recommend her to everyone who needs help with editing!!!

I am on the path of writing a book, which is a difficult task within itself. When on this path and looking for an editor, you should look for someone straightforward yet kind, fast yet patient, and most importantly willing to listen. That’s Pat. Not only that, but she was quite knowledgeable in the matter of editing and grammar as well, and she was constantly trying to help me understand it better myself (and I definitely do now!). She also made sure I understood every single edit she made or thing she was trying to explain to me. I guarantee she did everything with a smile on her face:)

Pat is a high-level professional in the field. I spent months of a struggle trying to put together the documents for my artist visa. What Pat did was magic. From the beginning of our collaboration, I felt confident that she was the one who would be able to help me. She brought my documents to a different level. Everything is organized now and looks professional. Pat is well-prepared, always prompt to answer any questions and make changes if needed. Everything was ready on time. Pat works fast. When we had a conference call together discussing the next steps and the better way to put my documents, she was supportive. She offered great ideas immediately. Compiling all my documents in one long document was a big challenge. Pat found the best way to do it. She also checked my grammar, and that was helpful – as an immigrant I have my struggles with the English language, and I am grateful to Pat for her hard work on my papers. She paid attention to all details. In my documents I had multiple articles and press publications, so Pat made sure that my papers emphasize the strongest side of my portfolio. She explained to me her edits, and why it was the best way to present them. I learned a lot about document editing. I am grateful for her work, and I am looking forward to our next collaboration.

Thanks so much, Ksenia! It was fun working on your documents. You are such a leader in your field, it was an honor to help you find ways to portray all your accomplishments in the best possible light. It was also exciting to know that this was part of the dossier that you are presenting to request approval for your artist visa. It's folks like you, the backbone of our nation's diversity, who so richly enhance the US as a nation of immigrants!

FAQs

  • What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

For the most part, I do not have a standard pricing system. Editing projects fall into a few fairly distinct levels of difficulty, ranging from those which need a light touch (proofreading) to a more involved approach (developmental editing). Most of my writing and editing projects are very customized, and for this reason, they are priced by the project. If a customer requests me to work by the hour, I will do that, but usually it is in the customer’s best interests if we price by the project.

  • What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

In my initial conversation with a client, when I am under consideration, I ask him to explain the nature of his project in as much detail as possible. I ask about the approach he wants me to take, goals and objectives as we make progress together, milestones, and deadlines. I tell him why I am interested in his project, review any areas of my expertise which could be an asset, and discuss projects I have completed in the past which have prepared me to do a good job for him. I close by asking if he has any further questions about what I am able to bring to his project.

  • What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

I grew up in a foreign country, and have been a language teacher since my teenage years. As a school teacher, my goal has always been to equip my students with the academic and social tools and skills they need to succeed in life, and to succeed in their chosen professions. I have always loved to write, and now that I have retired from the classroom, I carry this same passion and focus into my business as a freelance writer. My goal is to lend my skills as a writer and editor to equip each client to find his voice, to clarify his message, and to deliver that message in his corner of the world with incisive impact to his target readership or target market.
