Dan came to mount a tv over my fireplace. He was on time (even early which was better for me!) and immediately got to work. After mounting my tv perfectly he even offered to help hang decor on my walls and helped me move furniture in my house without even charging any extra than what he originally quoted me just for the mounting. He is a GREAT handyman and the nicest guy. I nightly recommend you use him! Plus he works for an unbeatable price. I took his axes and plan on using him in the future!

Master Services rebuilt my entire chimney. It looks great and they did s great job on the outside. After demoing my old brick chimney they discovered my firebox was not up to code as it was just sitting on wooden blocks. They repaired that at no additional cost; however, I later discovered they had pulled the firebox away from the hearth on the inside. When I called them back to see if they would at least fill the gap, they wanted an additional almost $300 sighting they had already brought me "up to code" at no additional charge. I didn't feel that was very fair considering I wasn't given notice about the prior condition of the firebox until AFTER the chimney was completed. I also had to make two calls to remind them the contract stated they would put a coat of paint on the chimney when completed. Scott and the crew were very nice and professional. I thought they gave me a good deal. Overall I'm saitisfied but I still can't use my fireplace until I get the gap in the hearth filled. I wasn't about to pay $250+ after already spending almost $10,000

The owner Scott was prompt and professional. Inspected and made recommendations for maximum output and safety of our fireplace. Kinda takes the worry out of using our fireplace after 20 years of previous owners that forgot to inspect and clean. Never met Scott until he showed up to do what he said and to me he seems to be a very honest and conscious local business owner that takes pride in his work. p.s. Go Navy!

Mr. Dennis Coleman was an excellent handyman; he arrived on time to install two high ceiling light fixtures and high ceiling fan, and even installed a chandelier on very short notice. He and his helper were very kind and completed the work in a timely manner. Of course the end results were awesome too, just look at the pictures! Thank you Dennis, we will definitely hire you again for other home improvements and refer you to our friends!

Ever tackled a big remodel job for us and did an excellent job. He installed laminate floors throughout our home and remodeled our kitchen (painted cabinets, installed granite, and new backsplash). He also completed several painting projects (trim & bedrooms). He was easy to communicate with and finished the job within a reasonable amount of time.

Carl is a good man who is true to his word. Very fair pricing and got the job done right the first time. I had a pool pump motor acting up and he came out, told me what was wrong and even helped me search for a replacement motor online. Once the pump came in he was here the next day and got us all setup. I'd recommend Carl for any pool related services along with plumbing, electrical or mechanical work. We'll be using him in the near future for some ceiling fan and exterior lighting installations. Great guy. Thanks, Carl!

I contracted Joshua to do an outdoor patio extension. Joshua is very cordial, professional, timely, and listens to what you want, not what he feels you need. His end product was outstanding. Best concrete work I have ever had and or seen in a residential project. He truly works likes its his house...rare in contractors now a days. I highly recommend him. His bids are very competitive.

Set in Stone did an exquisite natural stone fireplace and mantle for us about a year ago. They just finished a gorgeous flagstone patio and walkway for my parents. I would highly recommend them to anyone an everyone. Top quality work from start to finish. The owner, Yancey, is one of the best professionals in the business and he listens to what you want and need no matter what the project. I'm literally trying to find something new for Set in Stone to do for us! My best compliment is my constant referral of them. Well worth calling for an estimate at the very least! :-)

DHC was recommended to us by a granite contractor. We called Zachary Geringer, checked his website, were impressed with the pictures of his work and also learned one of our neighbors had used Zak's services to remodel her master bath. She gave him a 5 star recommendation, So we met and hired Zak to, first, remodel our guest bathroom and if we liked it, then we would consider including the master bath/dressing room and kitchen areas. We have lived in our home since 1981 and this was our first major renovation, so knew we needed someone who was experienced and flexible enough to handle unexpected structural challenges as well as providing us with new facilities with a definite "WOW" factor. Zak promised that he and Nate would be here on time every day, work diligently, clean up daily and stay on our job full time and continuously until finished to our satisfaction. And they did! Zak is a perfectionist and demands the same high standards of his sub-contractors: cabinetry, granite, tile and floor installers. The guest bathroom was completed first-rate and definitely sold us on continuing with MHM. In fact, we added all the other areas, plus the foyer, half-bath, breakfast and laundry rooms to the list. The new master bath includes one of the classiest new walk-in showers you will ever see. We weren't sure to what extent we wanted our kitchen remodeled. Zak suggested options and improvements, led us through our doubts and produced a beautiful result. Check the granite rainforest counter tops, back splashes and beautiful new custom-built cabinets in the picture section. Wow! Zak is an expert plumber, electrician and carpenter - he does it all! He rebuilt our substandard bath floors and walls before adding his touch for a gorgeous result. He removed a wall and raised a ceiling to open the kitchen. We are very pleased. Everyone involved in our project, which took more than three months, was professional and provided us top quality work. If you want a confident, proficient professional, call Zak and give him the opportunity to make you happy with your remodeling project.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How does a chimney get cleaned?

A professional chimney sweep can clean your fireplace and chimney to help prevent chimney fires and keep your fireplace running in peak condition. Regular chimney cleanings are critical for removing the highly flammable creosote that can build up inside the walls of your chimney over time and cause chimney fires. When hiring a cleaning company, ask the chimney sweep if their cleaning fee includes removing soot, creosote and blockages from the chimney flue and liner, cleaning the smoke chamber and shelf, and cleaning the firebox and the damper to ensure that you’re getting a comprehensive cleaning. Expect the chimney sweep to cover the flooring around the fireplace and properly seal off your fireplace opening to catch any soot that comes out during the cleaning.

Look for a chimney sweep who has been certified by a nationally recognized organization such as the Chimney Safety Institute of America (CSIA), Fireplace Investigation Research and Education (FIRE), or the National Fireplace Institute (NFI). This will help ensure that your chimney work will be completed in a professional manner and your home will be safe from a chimney fire.

Do I need to clean my chimney?

A fireplace makes a home cozy in winter, but it also requires cleaning to keep your family safe. According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), 28 percent of home heating fires are caused by a failure to clean solid-fueled heating equipment — primarily chimneys. On top of that scary fact, nearly 20 percent of all fire deaths are caused by home heating equipment. At a minimum, the NFPA urges homeowners to have chimneys and fireplaces inspected once a year to ensure there are no obstructions blocking the flow of air or any buildup of dangerous and highly flammable creosote. A certified chimney sweep will know what warning signs to look for and have the proper tools. Besides personal safety, saving money is a great motivation for having a chimney sweep regularly clean your chimney. If your chimney liner is not kept clean and in good working order, replacing it can cost thousands of dollars. A yearly cleaning is the baseline for a safe chimney. If your chimney is your main heating source, ask your chimney sweep whether you should have it cleaned more often. If your chimney is not venting properly and smoke is coming into your house, if you notice that the wood you burn is not burning efficiently (turning completely to ash), or if you have other concerns, call for a chimney cleaning and inspection right away.

How much does it cost to have the chimney swept?

The national average chimney sweep cost is $100 to $130. The National Fire Protection Association recommends having your chimney inspected at least once a year, but daily use and other factors might mean you need more regular service. Here are several reasons your chimney sweep cost may be higher than the national average:

    • Overly dirty chimney: If you haven’t cleaned your chimney in many years, or if you’ve just bought an older home and don’t know how long it has been since the chimney was cleaned, excessive grime could increase the cost of the job.
    • Roof height or chimney height: The chimney sweep may also charge an extra fee if your roof is too high for a ladder to reach or is too steep to safely climb on without a harness.
    • Frequency of use: If your fireplace is your primary heating source, the buildup of soot might be far greater than if you just use your fireplace a few times a winter when company comes over. This may impact cost.
    • Excessive debris: Leaves, twigs, and other debris that’s collected in your chimney is a fire hazard and should be cleaned immediately. An excess of junk may result in higher chimney sweep costs.
    • Live or dead animals: Prepare to pay extra if live or dead animals are in the chimney. Rodents, birds and bats can all set up camp in your chimney. A chimney cap can help prevent them from getting in, but once you hear something scurrying around, or smell the unmistakable scent of dead critter, call a chimney sweep immediately.
    • Geographic location: Chimney sweep costs may be higher in your city due to factors such as a higher cost of living or higher cost do business (insurance, overhead, employee wages, etc.).
    • Chimney repair: Any repairs that are needed internally or externally to your fireplace will increase costs. A thorough cleaning and inspection will reveal whether repairs to masonry, tuck-pointing, the back wall, bricks, the fireplace floor or the crown are needed.
    • Chimney cap installation: A chimney cap prevents debris from collecting in your chimney as well as preventing animals such as birds, mice, or raccoons from taking up residence inside. The cost of the chimney cap plus the labor for installation can increase fees.

How often should you have your chimney swept?

Regularly having your chimney cleaned is highly recommended both to improve the chimney’s efficiency as a heat source and to prevent home fires. The Chimney Safety Institute of America (CSIA) recommends having your chimney inspected at least once a year. You can hire a chimney sweep to clean the chimney while also inspecting it to ensure there is no damage to the lining, firebox or masonry. If you’ve had a new fireplace or wood-burning stove installed, CSIA urges you to have it checked halfway into the first season of use to make sure it’s operating safely. According to industry standards, a chimney sweep is recommended if more than 1/8 of an inch of soot or creosote has built up in the chimney or flue. Some fireplace experts suggest having your chimney cleaned, regardless of buildup, after every 1-2 cords of wood burned. Consult with your chimney sweep about what is best for optimal efficiency and safety with your fireplace.

How long does it take to clean a chimney?

A typical chimney cleaning takes between 30 and 60 minutes. Wood insert fireplaces may take longer to clean, as can chimneys that contain birds’ nests, excessive debris or wildlife. A chimney sweep will arrive at your location and assess the fireplace to be cleaned, and will set up protective coverings or dropcloths to prevent any ash or soot from escaping into your home during the cleaning. Using high-powered vacuums, they clean out ash and other debris in the firebox. With special, long-reach brushes they brush down the interior walls all the way to the top of the chimney to loosen and remove built-up soot and creosote. Many chimney sweeps also offer inspections in tandem with cleanings to make sure you don’t have any cracks or damage inside the chimney or out. Repair work or additions — such as installing a chimney cap — can increase the cleaning time.
