We get to play with dogs all day long! Who wouldn't love that? :) Helping a family by training their best friend gives us a sense of joy that is found in few other occupations. Watching a family grow closer to their pet is a blessing!

    Wonderful work and amazing attitudes
My 6 year old lab mix went in for a 3 week training boot camp. I just brought her home and the results are great! I walked past distractions, dogs and yelling toddlers with complete focus on me and my commands from her. She really loved her time there, and you can tell the people treat each dog like family. She will definitely be back for doggie day care and boarding if we go on overnight trips in the future. I really trust these guys to love her like I do.

MAGIC for our high energy Boxer puppy!!
THE BEST!!!! Our boxer puppy Pearl participated in the 3-week Board and Train Program under Oscar's direction. She is a young puppy, full of energy, very stubborn, cuddly and so cute. We were amazed at her progress in the final 10-days and especially the day that we picked her up, attended the transition workshop with Pearl and Oscar and brought her home. She has been back for boarding and was unbelievably excited to walk back through their doors. Oscar and his entire team are compassionate and top notch. We greatly appreciate their time and attention for our puppy. We will be back for follow-up training as needed and potentially puppy day care to help keep Pearl engaged and active during the day. Definitely a strong recommendation all around.

    Barks 5th Ave.
Met with Pat the owner for first consultation. Told him what I was looking for /expect to get out of the the training. He recommended the 3 wks. Of board and train. I had no problems deciding whether to proceed or not after the consultation. Left Maxx with them to begin his training ON THE SPOT. Thanks Pat looking forward to see how he progress in the next 3 weeks.

Amazing! Very beneficial for my 5YO boxer, he went into the 3 week training (being shy and a bit rebellious) and came out a very well behaved dog. I'm very grateful I found them and very thankful to Oscar for the training he's provided not only to my baby but also to me. Highly recommend Barks 5th Avenue. Great experience from the first time I requested info to the time the hand over happened. Grooming and daycare was also very good. Chowder will definitely be visiting daycare there and next is puppy training for my boxer. Old dogs can learn new tricks!

We took our fur baby, JJ, to Barks for the 3 week board & train program for basic/general obedience and we have been AMAZED at the difference the in house training has made. When JJ came home he was so very obedient that we were all shocked. What a little pleasure it is to have a puppy that looks to you as his leader instead of the other way around. Now to get the other 3 pups in for this training! LOL If you have been looking for proper training for your fur baby, look no further......you are on the right site!

Jenny has just started. My first opinion of the facility and people was warm and sincere. No one pushing their expertise, but just sharing what they have. Right away Jenny liked the trainer and was having fun just getting to know him. So, her training has begun. Thank you for your service. Laura

Absolutely amazing. The people are the kindest in the world, and the results are unbelievable. My min pin is spastic and hyper and she now will stay in one place for what's seems like forever, I'm honestly shocked and so impressed. I will recommend them to anyone who need to board, train, groom or do anything involving their dog! Thank you guys so much you're awesome! Mike the trainer is so kind and dealt with all my silly questions, very patient and it seems like they work magic even though they're just the best at what they do!

Mike and family at barks 5th Avenue have changed our life with our german shepard. She was wild and we thought we were going to have to give her away. There training gave our dog fina....another chance to be truly a house dog with manners. I can't thank them enough they are truly professional dog trainer. I would recommend them to everyone....my friend also had his dog trained there with the same results. Once again if you need a referral to call me that is not a problem

We are so thankful we found Pennie, Mike, and Barks 5th Avenue! Our border collie, Watson was an improved puppy when we picked him up from the board and train boot camp. I even got teary eyed when we saw all he had learned and how well behaved he was in just a few weeks. Mike took the time to teach us what we needed to know for quality carry over in home training and it worked like a charm. Mike and the Barks 5th team will give you the tools you need for success. What's even more impressive is how much everyone cares. We always feel comfortable asking follow up questions after training sessions with Mike and our Barks 5th friends always make the time to educate and share their experience. Makes for happy dogs and happy owners. We also LOVE that Watson gets visibly excited when we walk into Barks 5th. We couldn't be more pleased that every time we go out of town Watson now has his home away from home with his friends at Barks 5th where he can frolic with other dogs in daycare, receive additional training sessions with Mike and come home freshly groomed and smelling squeaky clean. Do yourself a favor and make the investment you will enjoy for years to come... Begin with training sessions at Barks 5th Ave right away! I guarantee you'll start here, but stay for all the wonderful things this place has to offer.

Ms. C, Thanks for allowing us to share time with Watson! He is extremely smart, and was a delight to have here at the training HQ. Hope to see you soon!

We adopted our dog, Colbie, from Barks. Colbie was being fostered there, and had received fantastic training from mike and pennie while she was there. Colbie is a DREAM, and a fantastic part of our family! We will be bringing our 2 other dogs to mike and pennie to get training as soon as we can! Talk to Aimee about nutrition too she is amazing and helped us get rid of our dog's allergic skin reactions to his food.
    Pat And Pennie M. Feb 11, 2015

Mrs. H, Thank you so much for taking Colbie into your home! She came to us very scared and apprehensive around people. By the time we had completed her training, she had made a tremendous turn-around. We are glad she is in a happy, loving home and that her time here at Barks was worthwhile!

Mike did a great job with our dog Gunner. I was literally pulling my hair out and was ready to kill ( not really) our dog or return him to the shelter (which I couldn't do either). He now walks Great on a leash. Knows his place when he is in trouble. He is only 8 months old. I am so glad we brought him to Barks. And he loves coming to daycare. Thank you.
    Pat And Pennie M. Mar 13, 2015

Ms. S, Gunner graduated with honors! So glad you gave us the opportunity to work with him. Hope to see you soon!

Q&A

Do you have a standard pricing system for your service? If so, please share the details here.
Our pricing system for our Board and Train program is quite simple: 3 week training program: $995.00 for the first dog (discounts apply for multiple dogs) ---That covers the TRAINING portion of the Program. Since the dog will be boarding with us, there is also an ADDITIONAL boarding charge, on top of the $995.00. The boarding price varies by the weight of your dog. The discounted boarding charge varies from $18.00-22.00 per night. This price ALSO includes FREE doggie daycare during his/her stay, which is part of the training and socialization program. Normally, daycare would cost $24/day.
How did you get started doing this type of work?
Our love of animals has drawn us together. Pennie, our founder, was a champion rodeo rider, and her love of horses eventually carried over to sport dog competitions (she is a multiple-winning frisbee dog champion). The rest, as they say, is history!
What types of customers have you worked with?
Our 3 week "board and train" package is the favorite amongst families. During this period, your dog stays with us at our facility, and has daily training sessions with his/her assigned training. We have found this to be the most successful method of training, as it allows your pooch to focus on the curriculum without any distractions.
Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?
We also train dogs for a local charity organization, the DAWG Foundation, who provide service dogs for military veterans battling PTSD. This is an intensive, year-long training process, and we recently began training 2 twin sister black labs. One will be going to a local Navy Corpsman veteran who battles PTSD. The veteran comes in daily to work alongside the trainers, and the team is quickly growing into a family. It is an amazing thing to watch!
What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?
Be discerning, beware of paid initial consultations, and ask questions. This is your dog; he/she loves you as much (if not more) than you love him/her. Do not place their well-being in the hands of someone you do not trust. Make sure that your Trainer is accredited, and INSURED. Many 'at-home' trainers are neither professional trainers nor insured. While nobody expects to use insurance, we all know that accidents can and do happen. Make sure the facility you choose is prepared for any occurrence.
What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?
At Barks 5th Avenue, we train using POSITIVE REINFORCEMENT. We do not insult, attack, severely punish, or hit dogs. We believe that by praising and rewarding dogs, they (like people) are more likely to perform as we request. Over the decades, we have found that this is the most successful method. Scoldings for inappropriate behavior are light and appropriate, with a focus on REDIRECTING the dog's attention and energy towards the positive task, instead of focusing on the negative.
