Lawrence has been an exceptional tutor who has greatly helped me improve my SAT scores in about 3 sessions. At the beginning of this process, finding a tutor seemed daunting and I was unsure if I wanted to invest in one. After realizing that I needed to be pushed, I began my research. I was introduced to Lawrence and he offered to set up a conference call to discuss what I needed to work on. He gave me a diagnostic test to complete and we began sessions as soon as possible. My friend and I participated in duo tutoring sessions and we both agree that Lawrence is skillful in the material and content presented, thorough in explanations, and engages with his students to ensure that we understand what is being taught. He went over useful strategies to save time and effectively solve problems. Lawrence is a genuinely kind and cool person, who has a flexible schedule and is willing to go to lengths for his student’s success. He was extremely patient and repeated the lesson plans if I was struggling to grasp the concept. Every time we would meet, he never rushed to fulfill the 1.5-hour timed session and would stay over time to make sure we have a schedule planned and were assigned a reasonable amount of homework, which was very generous of him. Since these tutoring sessions took place during the school year, Lawrence was considerate of our obligations in school and would give necessary homework for practice that was never a burden and easily manageable. He also checks up on his students and makes sure they are on task and will refer them to any other specialized tutors if they need help in academic subjects. Our experience with Lawrence has been amazing and we look forward to working with him again soon.

My review is a bit early because we have only had one lesson so far but I have to say Lawrence and my son clicked immediately. I had a phone conversation with Lawrence that lasted about 30 minutes before his first visit to go over what my son needed help with and what our goals were. At that time we decided to wait on his PTSA scores before Lawrence's first visit. Then when he came to our home it was right down to business with my 16 year old. Lawrence called me after the initial prep with my son to go over how he felt about the session and his expectations. Lawrence did give my son some homework (minor) but he did tell me this will increase. We have scheduled his second visit. Lawrence is doing prep for SAT's.

My daughter worked with Lawrence for her ACT test prep. He was terrific! Besides knowledge review, he also coached her on how to take the test: the types of questions they would ask, what they were looking for in the answers, best use of time, etc. Laurence was also personable, prompt, and flexible with scheduling. My daughter took the ACT and got a 34 on her first try thanks to his help.

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
We start with a brief consultation, generally lasting 30 minutes to 1 hour. Our initial goal is to get to know the student and family, which is crucial for understanding the student's unique needs. We'll go over the student's academic and testing history and identify and key strengths and weaknesses he/she has. From there, we provide a short diagnostic test for the student to take independently and then create a personalized tutoring plan!
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
My role as a mentor and teacher for students actually began back in 2008 when I was the captain of my high school debate team. I worked closely with our coach to develop our "novice" members and contributed to the foundation of one of the most successful debate teams in the state of Texas. When I enrolled at UCLA in 2010, I transitioned to working in the test prep industry and was amazed by the results that could be achieved when all aspects of the student-tutor relationship were properly engineered. I worked with a number of companies, big and small, and eventually started my own business here in Los Angeles.
What types of customers have you worked with?
The diversity I've encountered when working with students is truly amazing. Most of my students are normal, everyday kids who have a dream school that they'd love to attend but simply haven't had success in the past when it comes to standardized testing. I've also dealt with students of unique backgrounds, including numerous student athletes and the children of actors, CEOs, and even the son of a former NBA champion.
