FAQs
- How did you get started doing this type of work?
I'm lucky. I've known since I was fourteen years old that I've wanted to be an editor. It's stuck with me since then, and the more I learn about editing, the more I love it.
- What types of customers have you worked with?
There are several types of editing: Substantive editing: Editing for organization, flow, tone, logic, facts and so on. Think of it as fixing the "big picture" problems. Copy editing: Editing for grammar, syntax, sentence structure, punctuation, and so on. Think of it as fixing the smaller issues. Proofreading: Editing to fix the small problems before it goes to print. Checking things like the table of contents, page numbers, headings, punctuation, and so on.
- What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?
Find someone who is willing to do the job exactly how you want it done. If you only want someone to proofread, make sure they will only proofread instead of redoing all of your work. Editors are here to help you, not to do your job for you.
