FAQs
- What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?
To receive $10 off of your piano service, schedule on a discount day for your area. See our website for a calendar of discount days and available appointments on those days. To receive additional discounts, gather together a group of neighbors to schedule on the same day. Generally, there is a flat rate for tuning. If it has been a long while since the piano was last tuned and the pitch has dropped more than 10% of a semi-tone, then there is an additional charge for pitch raises.
- What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I attend twice monthly technical seminars, a week-long annual conference, and sometimes a several day regional conference. I read the Piano Technicians Guild Journal. I meet with other piano technicians several times a month to discuss technical issues. I am a part of several email groups that communicate regularly regarding issues that arise. And when I encounter an issue with a piano that I haven't resolved before, I reach out to others for more information.
- How did you get started doing this type of work?
I came from a musical family. You could say that music is in our genes. After pursuing my first love, Psychology, I took my brother Craig's advice (Craig Turner, RPT servicing pianos in Fairfax County, VA) to change my career to Piano Technology. He knew that I would love this type of work because he too is a piano technician and he knows my preferences. I am eternally grateful to him for his advice and for continuing to suggest it after I said no the first dozen times.
