John tutors our family in piano. He has an excellent method of progression of lessons and the role of lessons to expand the appreciation and the understanding of the music. He has a gentle approach which is good for the little ones but also drives the older ones with goals and instills passion for music.Mar 17, 2015
I think John is a wonderful Instructer with a lot of patience and very understanding.Jun 17, 2015Verified
John Kunu is flexible in his approach to teaching, he brings many styles & skills to the keyboard, and he is willing to teach to what the goals of the student are rather than a regimented steps approach. John has been my daughter's piano teacher for several years. We are a musical family so it was important to us to choose a teacher with the depth in classical but also the breadth of knowledge in contemporary pop music, in order to keep our teen engaged in what she was learning. John's flexibility to teach to her interest areas while still making sure she mastered foundational skills and repertoire are rare in a piano teacher. We love that he weaves both classical instruction and improvisation so that a student is comfortable playing a piece of Bach as well as the latest songs on the radio. This has kept the learning fresh and relevant. But the greatest thing of all is when we hear our daughter wander over to the piano and just play -- she sounds beautiful and it is utter joy hearing your child make music and know that she will have this for a lifetime.Feb 25, 2015
John has been teaching my daughter to play piano for a long time. He is an outstanding musician, is very patient and incredibly flexible. His understanding of music theory and approach to the piano is inspiring. He can play and explain any style of music that we have asked and we could not be happier. I highly recommend John.Feb 27, 2015

- What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)? My tuition starts out at $39/half hour session/ per student. Since often, I travel to my students, and depending on where they live, I may have a nominal surcharge for fuel and time. If the family has siblings / neighbors / etc., I give very generous discounts. Some of my students are more advanced and request 45 minute or hour lessons. I offer reduced tuition for those as well.
- What is your typical process for working with a new customer?I like to get to know the person; to see what it is that they need; Lessons for their child/children, themselves, concert performance, recital, memorial service or a celebration. Whatever the occasion, I know it is a priority to my clients and it becomes a priority to me.
- What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?I received my music education degree from Shenandoah University, in Winchester, Virginia. I am always working in the studio; either recording, scoring a film, collaborating with singers and other musicians, in addition to leading classes either related to music or my church music-ministry work.
