Mr Curtis was hired to replace our load bearing beam by a flashing beam. However, in his quote, he didn't include moving electricity cables away from the ceiling. After half hour open the ceiling, he saw the electricity cables there and advised us to get electrician. We consulted electricians and realized that it would take $10,000 to move the cable around. It would be a whole week's work and needs to tear up a couple of walls. We can't do that. Therefore, mr. Curtis can't do his job neither. We informed him that we would stop the project and pay what he has done. Since we paid him $2,000 at front to remove the bearing beam, which he hasn't done and can not do, we asked him for partial refund. Appearantly, cutting the ceiling doesn't cost him $2,000. But he refused to cover our ceiling up and informed us that his working schedule till march. We informed him that we would hire other contractor to cover the ceiling before Christmas. He threatened not to give us refund. Now, he is having our money. We have to hire a lawyer and determined to go to court to get it. It is very bad as one home owner can encounter. It is the first time we met a contractor like this. This person has no ethnic in his profession. By the way, he got our money on 18th of November. He started on 30th of Nov. after he got the money, he didn't even follow his start date. He used our money to pass a merry thanksgiving.Dec 15, 2015VerifiedThe Curtis Group Design Build Inc.'s reply
We were contracted to do the load bearing beam for Wendy Smith on the 18th of Nov. She was told that it would be a week or so before we could start, seeing as though it was thanksgiving. We did start the job and discover that there were electrical wires in the way of the new beam and advised her to hire an electrician. After she contacted an electrician, she said it was $10,000 (which is over the top. I would have contacted many more and that other issues had arised. She asked if we could come back and repair the drywall that was removed and refund a portion of the deposit. We could not come back due to the backlog of work we have until march. That being said, breaching a contract in the state of VA is not that simple, the homeowner needs to cancel the contract within three days of signing and after the three days they need to submit a letter of breach. The contractor then calculates the cost of the work that has been done and the losses incurred for labor profit because of the breach. Finally, the contract cost was $5,500 and this was a labor cost only to do the job. So, in all fairness, $2,000 is not even close to the cost of work that has been done and the loss of profit. I'm sorry this has happened, but contracts do exist to protect both parties. My hope is that Wendy understands the ramifications breaching a contract has on any contractor. My suggestion for those that sign a contract, mostly in construction, have costs set aside for unforeseen conditions. Our hope is to help Wendy find a reasonable Electrician and move forward with the project. Sincerely, Curtis
Came highly recommended! Extremely professional and courteous. Had them replace trim extensively, paint exterior of house and general sealing and caulking. Job had some weather related delays but other than minor adjustments to our punch list, these guys did a great job. Will definitely hire them again!Oct 15, 2015The Curtis Group Design Build Inc.'s reply
It was a pleasure working with you!
I received a voice mail from Curtis regarding this project. Called back and left him a voice mail to stop by or call me whenever he can to further discuss details. As of today which is more than a week later, no answer or follow up. After reading their reviews here, I'm glad they did not call. To be successful in business "I am a business owner by the way", you have to treat your customers including potential as if they are the oxygen you breath to survive and be successful. Meaning, if I get a call from a client, I return their call immediately or at least as soon as I can to earn their business and trust and invest in my business. Good Luck!!!Mar 2, 2018VerifiedThe Curtis Group Design Build Inc.'s reply
Okay. If you can prove, with out a shadow of a doubt, that you left a voicemail and I actually got it and then didn’t call you back, ( which agreed would be absurd) then you would be correct and I would concede and apologize to you. Some people don’t call me back, but if it’s of real importance I always call back. Curtis

Deck or Porch Repair
Curtiss and Apollo at Odd Jobs did fantastic work on my deck! I reached out to Curtiss for deck repair/removal work. After meeting with me and discussing the project, Curtiss gave me a fair quote. I subsequently hired him for the job. We were able to schedule a time within two weeks. They showed up right on time, did the repair and removal. The end state is fantastic and turned out better than my expectations. I will definitely be reaching out to Curtiss on future projects.Apr 2, 2019VerifiedThe Curtis Group Design Build Inc.'s reply
