We have photo shoots, get photos taken of us to capture who we are in this moment so that later on when we are a little more gray, have a few more wrinkles, when our kids have grown up to become teens and adults, we can look back and remember what was. Before I begin any portrait session, I set my mind with this perspective. My job as photographer, is to get past the performative burden the camera puts on, and to capture the honest interactions and emotions that occur. It will be these genuine moments of a mother reading her child’s favorite book, braiding her daughter’s hair, a little girl giggling on the hip of her mom because she thinks she looks so silly in mom’s floppy hat, that will be cherished. These are everyday moments and yet with the aid of a photo, are made specific and palpable. The power of portrait photography is that it can capture reality for a time and turn everyday moments into lifelong memories.
