I have been a piano instructor for over 25 years. I offer private and group instruction for children and adults at all levels. It is real joy for me to share my love for the piano with others. While learning to play, my students are introduced to a variety of music, from classical to contemporary.
I have a master's degree in education.
While working for Fairfax Co. Schools, I was honored to receive a Human Relations award.

My children have been students in Mary Jane Cogan's piano class for 13 years and 9 years respectively. She taught them from the ages of 10-18 and 6-18. We had tried a few other piano teachers in the area and were completely unsatisfied with all of them. We were looking for a teacher that would help our children have the desire to play piano without being pushed to practice. In Mary Jane we found that wonderful combination of a teacher who truly loves music and playing the piano and her goal is for her students to develop that same love. She has always encouraged our children to play piano because they love it not because they have to. Now as adults, they continue to enjoy playing the piano. We have always been very satisfied with Mary Jane's approach to her lessons and her students. She tries to meet the needs of each student at their appropriate level often allowing them to have a say in the music that they play. She is very gentle and calm and makes the lessons a pleasurable, stress-free experience for her students.

My 3 children have all taken lessons from Mary Jane for the last 4 years. I also took lessons from MaryJane to re-learn what I had lost since I was a teenager. Mary Jane's love of music truly inspires her students. She is incredibly patient and customizes her lessons to the students abilities, and their interests. If they like contemoriary or show music -- great -- she incorporates that along with classical or seasonal pieces. While she does not "require" a certain number of hours of practice, she encourages, and my daughters simply play -- 10 minutes here, 20 minutes there, because they enjoy it and can see their own progress. Mary Jane is always a pleasure to work with.

Mary Jane Cogan is a wonderful teacher because she individualizes her lessons to the student's ability, and personalizes her recitals which are always centered around a theme. She not only teaches students piano, but she also instills in them a love of music - and the arts. She taught both of my daughters piano and to this day, and they enjoyed their time with Mrs. Cogan!

I am an adult who has always wanted to learn how to play the piano. I was referred to Mary Jane by my friend and have thoroughly enjoyed learning from her. She is patient, helpful and truly caters to the individual needs of her student. I am thrilled to be fulfilling my dream of playing the piano and am thankful for Mary Jane for making it so pleasant!
