FAQs
- What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
First, I have a love for the water, exercise and swimming. I started swimming at a very young age and was put in infant classes as a baby to get comfortable with the water. I swam for many years for fun. I then took Junior Lifeguard classes in the summer and learned how to rescue individuals, perform CPR and First Aid and tread water amongst many others things. I then became CPR/First Aid Certified for the first time at 13 years old as I started working with kids as a rookie Coach in a sports program and I had to get it renewed every year or two. After that I was offered a position as a swim instructor for the summer by a Fire Fighter who's kids I coached. I was then trained everyday for 2-3 weeks under the swim instructors at the school how to teach all different ages how to swim. I thoroughly enjoyed it and soon I was getting requests from parents to have me teach their kids. I didn't realize the demand for swim lessons and after the swim job ended for the summer I started doing lessons on my own for friends and family and soon through word-of-mouth I gained students. I have been teaching swimming for two years now and making it apart of my business and it has boomed in only a year.
- What types of customers have you worked with?
I've worked with babies, toddlers, pre-schoolers and adults. I have taught babies that are 10 months old to adults who are over 30. I have worked with students from all different countries and backgrounds as well. I have taught not only American kids but Indian, European, German and Hispanic children as well. I love working with many diverse children and parents!
- What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?
Make sure that you and your child are completely comfortable with the swim instructor you pick. Make sure the swim instructor is friendly and engaging but firm when they need to be especially with little ones. An excellent swim instructor should not frighten or make your child fearful but help them get over their fears. Swimming and becoming comfortable in the water can be a very scary experience for some kids and they need to have a nurturing instructor who will challenge them but not push them to much where they don't want to learn. So making sure you are comfortable with a swim instructor and there is a connection is very important. Some instructors are great teachers but are not great with people or kids and that is a must!
