- What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?
My pricing depends on the piano's needs. If your piano has not been tuned for many years, it is probably very flat. That would mean I would have to bring up to pitch, which takes longer than a normal tuning. Therefore, bringing the piano up to pitch would cost more than a regular tuning. As far as repairs, simple repairs may be included with the tuning. When it comes to major repairs, I would discuss with you what repairs need to be made and then send you a quote if you decide you want that repair done. Payment is expected the day of the tuning. With a repair job, I require half payment up front, then half payment at the end of the job. I do not accept credit cards. Payment can be made in cash or check.
- What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
I set up an appointment either through e-mail or a phone call. Once at your house I enjoy hearing a bit about the piano's history, your interest in playing the piano, if you have children taking lessons, etc. Then I'm off and tuning. At that point in time you are free to other things while I plink away at your piano.
- What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I completed the Randy Potter Piano Curriculum, an extensive home study course. This led me to joining the Richmond Chapter of the Piano Technicians Guild where I attend monthly meetings, Technicals are presented at the meeting by different member of the guild that address a certain aspect of working on pianos. I have attended many of the National Piano Technician's Guild Conferences (Atlanta, Norfolk, Lancaster, PA) and many of the Mid-Atlantic conferences. The workshops at these conference have been an excellent way of giving me hands on training. What I find is that other piano technicians are very willing to share their expertise. I have many "gurus" from whom I can learn. I have worked with the piano technician who oversees the pianos at Virginia State University. Again, a "guru" who has taught me much about working on pianos.
