Sadly, the gentleman never followed up and I had to contact him which should have been a sign. When I did, I spoke with his wife who indicated he was on a job in Surry and she would contact him. Almost 5 minutes later he reached out to me and indicated he would be on his way - he was finishing up a job so I thanked him. Approximately 15 minutes later he called and said he had gone by his house in Poquoson to shower and clean up and he would be on his way, and should be at my home in Williamsburg in about 40 minutes. Though that was a quick trip from Surry, I thanked him for contacting me. Once he arrived, he wanted to install the requested 110 outlet on the existing 220 wiring of which I questioned wasn't that going to a safety hazard due to the lower voltage being on the same line with the higher voltage?
Also wouldn't that be against the County Code? Especially after I asked the question if installing a gas stove would make a difference and he quoted a price and indicated there would not be a change for the price quoted. I had provided a very thorough explanation of the work when looking on Thumbtack. When he advised what he was going to do, I questioned if that would be safe, he then increased the price after he had quoted another price in writing, stating that was an error on his part? When questioning the change in price, he didn't really have a clear answer other than it was a mistake on his part. I advised that I had received a much lower quote from another Master Electrician, and he then changed his price to be within $50 of that price, and then advised that he couldn't do the job for that price either? While I can appreciate all electricians for their craft, be careful when issuing quotes to customers if you have no intentions of doing the job the "proper" way or doing shortcuts that will eventually cost them extra money later to bring the job up to code.
