Introduction: One of the things that sets me apart as a teacher is my ability to tailor my lessons to suit the needs of an individual. I am versatile with my teaching methods partially because of how I learned. I began learning music by ear and through intuition. After having developed these skills, I began to concentrate on studying music as an academic subject. I have had three good teachers myself, and all of them used different methods that were successful in their own ways.
I want all of my students to learn to read music, understand how to shape music, breathe into phrases, and to understand music theory. However, I look for an approach that helps an individual student to learn the best. I also try to ensure that the student learns the correct repertoire, scales and studies to audition for a four year college if they choose to do so.
I believe that studying music benefits an individual in all facets of life. On the surface, it is clear that studying music benefits people intellectually because of the memorization and technique involved. The study of music also benefits people beneath the surface in many ways. By pursuing an understanding of how to channel emotion through music and shaping the music, one will also become more empathetic and sensitive to sound. Developing these traits enhances an individual's worldview and cultural sensitivity.
