About

I offer math tutoring for middle school, high school and college students, as well as preparation for the math sections of the SAT and the ACT. My specialty is non-judgmental support to help students overcome math fear. On the theory that students learn better when they are relaxed, I do my best to keep my tutoring sessions fun. (I do it by joking a lot.) Like any good tutor, I go at the student's pace and teach in accordance with both the student's learning style and the demands of the class. Students' questions are encouraged; learning math is all about making sense of it. I have a great time tutoring, and students seem to enjoy their sessions with me. And, of course, their grades go up. I taught math at NOVA for 14 years, and I have a masters degree in engineering.

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?
Two deals: If you pay full price for my service and if we meet for three hours within a week, the third hour is half price. If you send someone to me and that person has at least one full-price session with me, you get one session free.
What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
To start, I listen to the student, and possibly the student's parents, describe the issue. With sensitivity to the student's feelings (usually fear), I work with the student on an assignment, paying attention to what seems to get through to the student best. I make it clear that I am there to help, not to judge.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
Education: a master's degree in civil engineering. In engineering school I didn't just take math classes; I applied the math I had learned. That helped me learn it so that I would never forget. Work experience: I've been tutoring for 20 years and I taught math in community college for 14 years.
