Proofreading focuses more on correcting errors such as spelling, punctuation or grammar, and it is typically the near last step in a writing process. Editing typically occurs earlier in the process, and it is often focused on organization and layout as well as addressing the author's purpose and creative direction. Technical editing is a specialized area with broad ranging actions that are required often to meet subject area, corporate or other needs.
