Introduction: My first priority is making sure that my customer knows what she or he wants, and creating a plan that addresses the emotional desires of the host and guests, and that's designed to meet the host's objectives. In addition, I take the dietary concerns of individuals very seriously. No one should have to feel left out of a party or event because there's little or nothing they can eat! It's really not difficult to meet those needs when they're known and the willingness is there. And, I like not only my customers and their guests to feel valued and cared for, but also my vendors. I like to treat my vendors as though they're my customers! I love being the producer/general contractor...synthesizing the diverse needs, expectations, and involved individuals, into just what was wanted! I love being out and about with my customers and vendors, problem-solving, and taking the burden and stress off the shoulders of my customers.

I rented Jessica's space at 140 Main St. for a 6-week workshop, as well as worked with her on the planning/promotion. She created an advertising poster for my class. I believe that the success of my class was in part due to Jessica's expertise, advice and encouraging energy. She helped me with her business experience in organizing, charging, creating policies, etc. She made plenty of time for all of my questions/concerns. She went out of her way to accommodate my needs in regard to the space, providing a clock and extra tables. The space was attractive and had a warm, comfortable feel to it. Jessica also created an effective poster that caught the attention of many people. I plan to continue to work with Jessica, both renting her space and hiring her to promote me.

Jessica planned a scavenger hunt for a group of my afterschool kids. She had clues that lead us around town, looking for architectual elements and curiosities. She had pre-arranged with business owners, so they expected us to stop in for further clues. The kids really had a good time, and Jessica's talent of organizing and pulling things together really made it fun for all involved. I hope to do something similar some day soon.

FAQs

  • How did you get started doing this type of work?

When I was a little girl, I began planning events as part of my playtime. At 7, I was producing plays for my brother and me to perform, and by 9, I was producing musical events in our neighborhood, getting lots of kids to play music, having my brother sell tickets to neighbors, and then acting as the MC. People would actually come! This is something that I've always done, and I realized one day, as I was working in my business, that what I do feels so familiar...and it is. It's all those components that I played at growing up--coming up with a concept, making a plan, involving others, and bringing everything together into a whole. That people feel good, that they feel respected, appreciated, cared for, and included, is a large part of why I decided to create this business. No one should feel anything but warmly welcome at an event they're invited to. I have so much fun doing what I do!

  • What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

Planning an event is a very personal thing, even if your event is public or for a large gathering. The planning becomes personal because emotions are always at play, even if they're not considered important in the planning. Anyone looking for an event planner, I feel, should pay close attention to how she or he feels when interacting with the prospective event planner. It's important to feel comfortable and confident...to feel that you're heard and that your concerns and wishes are understood and taken seriously so that the planning is what you need...then you can end up having a seriously good time!
