What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?
We are asked frequently how much it costs to use spray foam in a project. Unfortunately, there is no easy calculation to answer this. As each project is unique, we offer each customer personalized solutions and provide them with options on how to achieve their goals. Just like in any field, if the job is an easy one, the cost is lower, But if it is complicated or has time restrictions just to name a couple of parameters, the price goes up. And it depends on the type of spray foam used. There are two main types: Open-cell - which is great for sound attenuation. Closed-cell - this is the highest performing of ALL insulation types - providing over an R-6 per inch. Not only the highest R-values, but can achieve all four of the building science requirements for a "tight" envelope. Thermal, moisture, air and vapor barriers Make the smart choice and use spray foam!
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
We are a committed member of our industry's organization: Spray Polyurethane Foam Alliance. Continuing education is offered by many sources and it is up to the individual company/contractor to ensure they stay up with the latest information and building codes. We attend at least two to three classes every month. And as a licensed State of Washington and Oregon contractor, we are required to have 32 hours of continuing education every two years. We far exceed that requirement. The trends in the building trades are always evolving, especially due to the "green" or "eco" approaches becoming mainstream. The customers are demanding better building practices. They want the best for their home or building. You will see LEED and other related certifications more and more in the news. As a contractor you have to be ready to answer your customers questions and provide the best product and service to stand out from the competition.
What types of customers have you worked with?
Spray Foam Roofing: SPF is the best option for flat, low-slope or odd shaped roofs. It is spray applied providing a monolithic seal, therefore no seams or penetrations where leaks usually originate. SPF is also sustainable - only needs to be re-coated to continue to provide you with many more years of service. Studies have shown SPF roofs are still doing their jobs after 30+ years in service. Even an SPF roof system that was neglected for over 20 to 30 years usually does not need to be removed as would conventional roofing. Insulation: Metal buildings - the use of closed-cell spray foam insulation provides the best insulation and provides thermal, moisture, air and vapor barriers. Another significant benefit is the structural strength gained be using the closed-cell spray foam... about 300 times stronger. Homes - have the tightest building envelope by using the closed-cell spray foam. Make sure your contractor installs a minimum of 2" to ensure you get the full benefits promised. Tanks - be it wine or chemical tanks, SPF is a great application to maintain the temperatures you require.
