About
I bring over 30 years of professional experience and extensive specialized training to every piano I service. I’ve completed multiple week-long advanced seminars at the Steinway & Sons factory in New York (including Comprehensive Service, Voicing, Damper, and Concert Prep courses), along with formal training from Yamaha and Shigeru Kawai. I’m a long-time Registered member of the Piano Technicians Guild and have served as a Regional Tuning Exam Administrator, helping examine and mentor other technicians. I’ve also taught classes at the national Piano Technicians Guild Convention. Beyond basic tuning, I focus on improving the touch and tone of your piano so it feels responsive under your fingers and sounds its best. Many technicians simply tune and leave — I take the extra time to refine the action and voicing when needed. My goal is simple: leave you with a piano that inspires you to play more. I’m trusted by many of the top piano teachers, schools, and universities in the greater Olympia area, and my work has appeared on nationally released recordings. Whether you have a high-end Steinway or a modest upright, I give every instrument careful, honest attention without pushing unnecessary work.

Ryan is awesome and I have used his services for years. It started with him moving a piano for me, then having it tuned. Years later, when I let him know I was looking for a different piano to purchase, he told me he knew of one coming up, and I ended up buying it. I know several pianists and teachers in the area, and they are the ones who led me to Ryan, telling me not to go to anyone else except him for anything piano related. And, they were right! Thank you Ryan!

Thank you so much! It’s been a real pleasure working with you over the years. I’m glad the piano move, tunings, and helping you find the right instrument have all gone well — the Knabe grand looks fantastic in your home! I love connecting people with instruments that fit them perfectly. Hearing that local pianists and teachers are sending people my way means a lot — that kind of trust is the best compliment I can receive. Thank you again for your continued support! Ryan

The piano that I grew up listening to my mother playing had become really harsh. Two techs had declared it unsalvageable. Ryan was pretty confident that he could improve it dramatically and he did! After a couple of patient hours of work on the hammers it sounds vastly better. I will be able to spend my later years listening to my daughter do wonderful things with it. (Perhaps I should learn to play?).

Hi Tim, thank you so much for sharing this beautiful story. It was an honor to work on a piano with such deep family meaning. I’m thrilled the hammer work brought its voice back so dramatically after two other techs had written it off. Knowing you’ll now get to hear your daughter make wonderful music on the same instrument your mother played — and that it might even inspire you to learn — is exactly why I love this work. Thank you for trusting me with such a treasured family heirloom. Ryan

Ryan is a fantastic piano technician and human being. I'm and up and coming technician myself, and I'm blessed to have such a skilled and generous person as one of my mentors! His approach really aims to make the most of every visit, considering the whole piano and not just the tuning. And as a fine pianist himself, he brings a very musical approach to piano service, understanding nuances that not every tech does. Highly recommend, you can't go wrong!

Thank you so much, Jacob! That really means a lot coming from you. I'm truly honored to be a mentor and resource as you grow in this craft. It's always a pleasure working with someone who cares so deeply about the whole piano — not just the tuning. Your own musical approach and attention to detail are going to serve you (and your clients) very well. Wishing you all the best as you continue building your skills — keep in touch! Ryan

Ryan of Pianova has been my primary piano technician in Olympia for almost 20 years. He and his wife Jean are a fantastic team who work hard together to make sure that the pianos sound right and scheduling and business issues are easy. Ryan is a Steinway certified technician who has excellent ears. Because he mastered his craft before the advent of so much technology, he is very adept at tuning by ear, and using this technique is still his primary focus. He does incorporate technology, but more as a supplement rather than only tuning to an app. As a result, the tuning sounds musical and is customized to my instrument. He has prepared my Steinway for all of the albums I have recorded, and just finished prepping it for an upcoming project. Highly recommend!

It's such a privilege to work with musicians of Jennifer Bowman's caliber! As a Juilliard graduate, former assistant manager of a top piano retail company, gifted composer, accompanist, and educator, Jennifer has been a true gift to the musical community of Olympia. As a technician, there are certain clients who teach us a lot — Jennifer is certainly one of them. If you love piano, check out her website (jenniferbowmanmusic.com) or her YouTube channel (@jenniferbowmanmusic1817).

From the very beginning, it's clear that Ryan brings both heart and exceptional skill to his work. A talented and humble musician himself, his knowledge goes far beyond simply tuning a piano. He has a remarkable understanding of both the science and the art of piano carefrom regulating the pedals, keys, and hammers to voicing the instrument for a warmer, more balanced tone. He also takes into account the room, the instrument itself, and the person who will be playing it. He's worked on my piano both for me, as a hobby pianist, and to prepare it for a concert pianist, and it's impressive to see how thoughtfully he approaches each situation.Ryan is generous with his knowledge, always happy to answer questions and explain what he's doing along the way. Every visit leaves me with a deeper appreciation for just how complex and fascinating a piano really is. When he is finished, my piano has a warmer, richer tone, a more even touch, and feels noticeably more responsive. It's always a joy to sit down and play.I'm truly grateful for the care he gives my piano and trust it to him completely. If you're looking for a piano technician with outstanding expertise, genuine craftsmanship, and a true passion for helping every piano sound its best, I can't recommend Ryan highly enough.

Thank you so much Mariana! It was so satsifying preparing your Kawai grand for the recent house concert with Wolfgang. I'm delighted that you really noticed the voicing work. Opening your home and sharing the joy of live piano music is a wonderful gift to our local music culture, and I’m grateful to play a part in that.
