My brother and I had the opportunity to take piano and voice lessons with Hannah Williams. She is unbelievable. An amazing teacher, extremely patient, and gives great feedback. She really knows what she is doing, and cares about each and every single one of her students. I'm so grateful I got to work with such a talented artist like herself, and would do it all over again in a heartbeat!

My daughter had guitar and vocal lessons with Kristen for 2 years. My daughter was 10 when they began, and grew immensely as an artist with the guidance Kristen provided. Kristen is an amazing teacher. I would highly recommend her for anyone looking to start playing guitar or needing voice lessons.

Ed Mays Groove Kitchen’s music is full of jazzy delta blues, pop, rock and funk as well, for a sound that is timeless yet modern in it's own way. It’s kind of like stepping back in time, but with the keys to the Porche. This group - is undeniably charming, and undeniably entertaining. Not to mention pretty darn talented. Our guests ranged in all ages, and everyone loved Ed Mays Groove Kitchen. If you want your wedding reception, or whatever event to really "Groove", book this band! -Christy K, Seattle, WA

These guys rock. They played a party we threw to celebrate our friend's marriage. Working with Adam during the lead up to the event was seamless and easy. Adam was responsive and worked to build a set-list to what we wanted for the party. The quality of music was superb. The lead singer had a great voice, engaged the crowd, and kept the party going all night. The band was fantastic, and the lead guitarist shreds. The dance floor was never empty as the band successfully covered songs from rock n roll to pop to county to blue grass, and satisfied everyone's musical preferences. I would highly recommend this band for any event or wedding. They helped make a great night even better with their talent, skill, and energy.

Mack Grout Piano Studios

At age 67, I felt I needed to hone my keyboard skills with someone who could teach me blues and/or jazz basics. My background was classical piano, taking lessons in the 1950's and 60's. I had 'graduated' from the workforce, always had a piano in my home and found Mack Grout, who was gracious enough to take on someone 40 years older than he was. He was patient, allowed me to tape our sessions, held me accountable and was a real inspiration to me. I learned a lot from Mack; he built up my confidence and made my life a lot richer with my improved knowledge and abilities. Unfortunately our lessons ended when he took a musical gig in China. A sad day for me.

Mari is a special teacher. Her experience, her artistic range and her "nose for what works" is second to none. She's also adored and revered by both the Titans of the industry and the critical community, but that's not the whole reason to go to her. She's the kindest, most generous and constructive collaborator I've worked with; - in short, everything you want in a tutor.

I have battle rap knowledge -- political and some randy stuff, so get me. I'm 43 and black, and recording is something I picked up when I was 16 or 17. It's sometimes fun; so, let's make beautiful music together, and we'll see how it goes.

I have 15 years of experience in the field of cosmetology, and I still have a great passion for what I do. I own a small hair salon where I perform cuts, hair colors, and facial waxing with a recent focus on formal styling and makeup artistry. I am also a photographer and a professional model, so I understand better than most, on how to create a look that captures well on film. I enjoy traveling to locations for events or photo shoots but prefer to keep basic salon services in my facility. I enjoy keeping current in my industry by regularly attending advanced training workshops.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

      What is a mariachi band?

Mariachi bands are rooted in Mexican culture. Traditional mariachi bands consisted of two or more members playing stringed instruments, wearing regional costumes adapted from the charro (Mexican horseman or cowboy). Modern mariachi bands, which are likely what you’re looking for when searching for a mariachi band for hire, feature at least four members who play stringed instruments (violin, vihuela, bass guitar called guitarron) and one or more trumpets. The costumes have remained the same, but now trumpets are synonymous with mariachi music. Mariachi bands for hire often play a wide range of music, including styles originating from Mexico and adopted from elsewhere. These include jarabes, waltzes, serenades, corridos (Mexican ballads), ranchera, cumbia, and more. Mariachi bands for hire bring a festive and soulful element to a party, birthday, wedding, corporate affair, fundraiser or community event. UNESCO has inscribed mariachi music on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

How much does a mariachi band cost?

A mariachi band will bring your party or event alive with their fabulous costumes, beautiful playing and strong vocals. The cost of a mariachi band for hire will depend on how many players are in the group. Each musician in a performance group needs to be paid, so pricing is usually based on the number of mariachis (musicians), the location of the event (and travel time required), and the length of the performance. Day of the week also affects cost, as does day — Christmas, New Year’s Eve and other major holidays will cost more than regular days. The national average cost for live bands of all types ranges between $740 and $1,200. Depending on where you live and regional rates for performers, you might expect to pay between $65 and $120 per hour, per player. Mariachi groups may have 12-15 players available for performance at one time, depending on your budget. Here are some examples of how the number of players affects average cost:

      • Four mariachis: $300 per hour for weeknights, $400 per hour for weekends.
      • Five mariachis: $350 per hour for weeknights, $400-$450 per hour for weekends. Weekends may have a minimum number of hours.
      • Six mariachis: $400 per hour for weeknights, $450-$500 per hour for weekends.

How many mariachis can a band have?

A mariachi band for hire can have as many players as you like. Modern mariachi bands typically have a minimum of four players with the trumpet playing a vital musical role along with stringed instruments such as the violin, guitarrón (a Mexican bass guitar with a deep body), vihuela (a Spanish stringed guitar) and guitar. Strong vocals are also an important component of mariachi bands for hire, since one or more of the players will be singing during the performance. For a truly spectacular show, you can hire a mariachi band with 15 or more players. The medley of stringed instruments, multiple trumpets, soaring vocals, and even an accordion or harp is powerful and beautiful. Mariachis typically wear the traditional costume of charros — Mexican horsemen. The look is a very regal, monotone suit, often in black or white, with silver adornments and embroidery. Mariachi bands often wear sombreros as well. Traditional mariachi bands were only made up of two or more players, according to a UNESCO report celebrating the cultural heritage of the musical style. The style of music originated in the state of Jalisco. Now the style of music is symbolic of Mexico but is celebrated all over the world, and adds a fabulous vibrancy to any group’s events, parties and weddings.
