Get everything in writing. Had a table custom built by Doug. We discussed the details, including measurements, materials, and that it would have to be delivered because I don’t have a way to transport. He took a $400 deposit and he said it would be an additional $100 on delivery. From the beginning there were issues. The timeline that I thought had been set up to complete it was significantly slower than what we discussed initially. Every time I called to check he would want to discuss dimensions again leading me to believe accurate notes weren’t being taken along the way. When table was complete he said he could drop it off by the end of the week but then when I called to follow up he said it would have to be the next week now. We set up a delivery appointment and no mention of a different end price was ever discussed. Just prior to him coming to deliver the table he called and said it would now be an additional $200. He flipped back and forth between the additional $100 being for more work on the table and the delivery. Both things could have been discussed earlier in the process. At this point I had no choice but to pay and I think that’s why Doug did that. Either I back out and I’m out $400, I rent a Uhaul for $100 and drive to pick it up, or I pay the ransom for the table. Doug claims that we never discussed delivery but my wife and I were both on the phone calls and we specifically remember discussing that he would be delivering it. Also I confronted Doug about why not mention delivery fee when we set up the time for him to come deliver. He conveniently waited until just prior to showing up to increase the price 20%. If along the way the complexity of the project changes I understand calling to discuss a price adjustment however in this case the table remained the exact same since the planning stages and no additional changes were made along the way. I give 2 stars because we are satisfied with the table but I am not pleased with how it was handled. My advice would be to write up a contract for even a small job. That way there is no disagreement about what was agreed to prior to starting.
