We feel lucky to have found Ann and Indigo. The therapeutic riding center where my daughter previously took lessons had closed, and we needed to find an instructor and a horse who would provide a recreational riding experience that was responsive to her special needs while also challenging her a bit. I appreciate all the time and care Ann has put into getting to know my daughter, who has mild physical challenges. She's made the transition to a new horse and facility painless, and is a stickler for details and safety. A month in and I'm already seeing a new level of skill and enthusiasm. And the facility (near Bethany Village) is picturesque, with lovely shaded benches--a nice place for Mom to relax, read a book, and enjoy being away from the city. We both really look forward to lesson days!
If you're looking to build a partnership with your horse, Nick can help you on that journey. The vaquero style of horsemanship is the best way to create a willing partnership instead of using fear, force or thinking you can "control" your horse with gadgets. Nick is an active student of Ricky Quinn and Buck Brannaman who learned from horsemen Ray Hunt and the Dorrance brothers. I've learned so much from Nick and Buck since starting my horsemanship journey back in 2010. From the easiest lesson horse to one who requires a lot of support from the human, Nick has helped me through it all and I learn something new every single lesson. Come ready to learn and you will see changes in you and your horse that you never thought possible.
Rebekah, her lesson horse, Jon, and her current barn make for the best riding situation I have ever had. Rebekah knows I want to progress and am willing to work at it, and she manages to make more advanced lessons enjoyable while being appropriately demanding about details and the finer points of dressage. She has the knowledge and patience to work through the frustrations and plateaus that come with any type of learning, and is generous in praise whenever there is progress. She maintains a wonderfully pleasant lesson atmosphere that others have noticed and commented on to me. I've never once heard her get irritated with a client! The horses are happy in their work and cared for very well due to her extensive barn management experience. She encourages clients to show but is sensible and does not push anyone's capabilities - horse or rider. I recommend her very highly whenever I can!
Wow! Not only did I discover that I COULD sit on and ride a horse, but I learned more than I could have imagined about horses from Karen Bragg. Clearly her ability to TEACH left a profound impression on me. She made it educational, comfortable and FUN!.
Jessica is a wonderful teacher and my daughter responds well to her. There's been more progress in a few weeks than we saw in a few months at a different horse riding school. We are very happy with the Avalon Management team!
What a great experience! Loraine's knowledge and experience made this the perfect place to start with my first riding lessons. The stables are well maintained and organized. Best of all,. Loraina took the time to stay at a comfortable pace that worked for me.
I took my foster child, who has autism, to meet Elizabeth last week. They got along famously! Her lesson horse is very gentle. We are looking forward to building a relationship with her. Can't wait to go back! ❤️
I started my daughter Julie on horse lessons a couple of years ago and things started out well until the barn wasnt providing the horses the proper care. Due to that the instructor had to move further away than we were willing to travel. I then made the mistake of basing the new place of instructions solely on convenience of location. It wasnt long before I was informed by my wife and daughter that the instructor gave the impression she cared more about what was on the cell phone than what the student was doing on the horse. I then searched for a new facility and instructor and found Bowman Sport horses. Ahna Bowman is the lead instructor and her family is her team. When I first contacted Ahna She asked what Julies goals and interest were and then explained how those could be achieved. I then took a tour of the facilities and watched Ahna give some lessons. I have found that the Bowmans and barn owners all work hard to ensure the horses and facilities are well kept. This of course is part of what they do to provide a safe environment for all. Also it is very evident they love their horses and dont treat them as just a commodity. In the first lesson Ahna evaluated Julies skills and found she had developed some bad habits and also determined she still needed to learn and re-learn some basic ones. From day one Ahna has respected Julie for who she is and how she learns. She is constantly analyzing what Julie is doing and how her horse is reacting. Ahna knows the level of each of her students and horses and provides a good balance of praise and correction for both the rider and the horse. She provides not only instructions to my daughter but explanation, and at a level that she can understood. When necessary she repeats the instruction and explanation until she sees feels its been assimilated. She keeps the pace of learning in line with the comfort level of the student but at the same time keeps things progressive. Since being at the barn I have seen the team take the time to help Julie deal with the various challenges in tacking up. But then they havent just held her hand in the process they have had her learn by doing. Julie enjoys bonding with the horse while tacking and grooming it. I have never felt Ahna rush a lesson even when it was Scotts birthday. Scott is Ahnas husband and partner in her love of horses. I feel Ahna treats you more like a friend than a customer. My daughters confidence and equestrian skills have improved much since being under the instruction of Ahna. I am very proud of Julie and happy to have chosen Ahna as her instructor. Ahna Bowman, her family and the barn staff are a great team. The web site ask to say something about what would improve the experience. Of course there is always room for improvement but it is difficult to say what, as I am "green". If I was forced to pick one I would chose something that would make Scott happy. Of course Ahna knows what that is and it would be a blessing for her.
Amy is amazing and a really good teacher she helps you learn and further your self while keeping the friend relationship with you! thank you for the great lessons and giving me something to look forward to every week! :)
We had ODP come out to a benefit event - they were a hit! They arrived in plenty of time to set up, the kids loved getting up close and personal with the pony, including taking pictures, and they really did a fantastic job! We have also been to their location in Newberg numerous times for riding lessons for our son. Cowboy Bob and Cowgirl Kim are just amazing with kids of all ages. Building confidence, teaching how to care for a pony, and making the experience a blast, even for the most apprehensive! We would recommend them wholeheartedly!!
This place is wonderful!! My daughter has epilepsy, ADHD and a blood disorder and is prone to being stressed and scared. But she just loves horses but was always afraid to get to close to them. I scheduled a class with Maria hoping for the best, to help her be a part of something that is therapeutic and amazing (which I always found horses themselves to be) and her experience was nothing short of outstanding. Maria went slow with her during her first lesson and was patient and kind and amazing! She went my daughters pace and Clara (my little girl) was so comfortable with Maria that she even got on the horse "Lenny" and sat there for a while!! Maria didn't push her to walk the horse she just let her sit there while smiling at my daughter and making small talk. I was so shocked and was almost in tears. The smile on my daughters face I'll never forget. My daughter goes almost weekly now for lessons with Maria as does my son Collin (age 13). My son loves riding and loves just being at the barn. And I can speak first hand with a child who has such stress in her life through medical experiences that this place is absolutely amazing.

Meet and greet: Would you like to get up close and personal with a horse and see for yourself why these beautiful animals garner so much affection? Maybe youve thought about riding a horse or taking lessons but felt unsure about being around a horse, or maybe youve always been a bit afraid and would like to conquer your fear? Here is your chance to come out and see what it is all about. Come spend some time with one of our beautiful animals. Let us give you a brief introduction into the life of a horse. We will show you how to safely approach a horse, how to say hi, how much they love to be brushed, and how soft their noses are. The Basics and Groundwork 101 (for you and your horse): * The Basics - I thought my horse had issues when I got him. He would not lunge, would not follow me, and he did not even want to lower his head for me to put a halter on him. After a lot of trial and error, some lessons, research, and a bunch of questions, I realized that he knew these things. I just did not know how to ask for them. Let me come to you and show you the basics or give you a hand with all those odd little things that are stopping you from enjoying your horse. * Groundwork 101 Yes, there were a lot of things I needed to learn but my horse did have issues. He crowded me when we walked. He would not get out of the way when needed. He was jumpy and freaked out if there were any other horses around. Not only do these kinds of issues interfere with your relationship with your horse, but they can also be safety concerns. A consistent groundwork routine worked wonders with AJ, and it can help you and your equine partner as well. Let me help cure some of your horses bad habits. Lessons: Judy offers horsemanship and riding lessons to all levels and all ages at Sauvie Island Stables. Do you want to learn how to control your horse from the saddle? Do you want to take your horse out to a trail, tack up, and jump on with the confidence that your horse is not going to spoke at every leaf that floats by on the ground? Maybe you need to brush up on your horsemanship skills. Maybe you would like to start showing again. Come on out and let us see where we can take you. Let us show you how you can gain control of your horse and how the end of the ride turns out. We have a few open times for new (brand new or new to us) riders to come out for riding lessons. Let us know your level of riding skills and what you are interested in. Do you need something else? Give us a call and lets see if we can help you in any way.

I believe being with horses should be a fun relaxing experience like being with any other pet. I believe that you and your horse had a good ride it shouldn't matter what a judge thought of you two. What matters is that you two are safe and happy.
