FAQs
- What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?
All services includes an initial review and editing, along with 1-2 subsequent reviews depending on how polished the second draft is. Resumes: I price by customization of the resume. Specifically, I use a three-tiered pricing system based on whether the resume is for entry, professional, or executive level applications. Thesis/Technical Writing: I price by page count (double-spaced) and the rate is determined using a single price/page. Rates are determined by whether the type of editing is proofreading (lowest rate), copy-editing (mid rate) or content editing (highest rate). Fictional Writing: Similar to thesis/technical writing, I price by page count (double-spaced) and the rate is determined using a single price/page. Rates are determined by whether the type of editing is proofreading (lowest rate), copy-editing (mid rate) or content editing (highest rate).
- What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
I begin by asking my client exactly the type of editing they're looking for, whether that's structural editing for a longer narrative or detailed copy-editing if the work is already in a final state. I believe it is very important in communicating clearly in the beginning what clients are looking for and what their optimal outcome is. If the work is in it's first draft, I like to review the piece holistically and provide structural comments and edits, giving this feedback to the client for review and discussion. After this first round of feedback, I typically go through 1-2 additional edits with the client, depending on how polished the second draft is. I believe in clear, constant communication with the client, as I am adamant about keeping the client's own voice and tone in any writing, even if it is as short as a resume or cover letter. In fact, the shorter the piece, the more rounds of edits are often necessary! As a final note, given that writing is such a personal activity, I ensure 100% confidentiality in all works that come across my desk.
- What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a bachelor's in philosophy from Yale University and graduated with a master's degree from the London School of Economics and Political Science, where I helped several peers with editing their theses. This was when I first began freelancing my editing skills, as demand for my editing help increased. Between my undergraduate and graduate studies, I worked at a law firm in New York City, drafting briefs and responses. After my graduate studies, I spent an additional three years in a Silicon Valley start-up, writing technical design documents/specifications, patents and business contracts. During this time, as side free-lance work, I helped dozens of clients with their admissions essays, cover letters, and/or resumes for colleges, professional schools or job applications.
