- What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
First, I strive to ensure a good fit between the student, parents, and myself. We do this during the free consultation by making sure goals align. Additionally, we come up with an agreed-upon duration of practice that the student will embark on. Practicing consistently is the most important part of learning the piano. I want to ensure the student is committed to the long slow process of learning piano and not wasting their time, energy, or money. Second, we beginning training based on what level the student is at. Typically, I start with several exercises by Czerny, Liszt, myself, and my Teacher (Mark Westcott) to have the student gain physical comfort with the instrument without the distraction of learning to read music. Third, we start learning notation and slowly apply it to the piano. During this phase, students will learn time signatures, key signatures, rhythmic notation, Major/Minor Scales, triads, seventh chords, and intervals. Lastly, we combine the elements of the second and third phases and embark on learning music from Bach, Mozart, Schubert, Beethoven, Chopin, Schumann, Liszt, Ravel, Debussy, and Scriabin, to name a few. From here, we will focus on pedaling, shaping, color, harmony, phrasing, and tempo and start to apply advanced musicality to the music we are learning. *While I've divided my process up into isolated phases, it is important to note that this will be quite fluid and that we may mix and match throughout our lessons.
