ARTIST STATEMENT
As It Is With Art ~ It Is In Business:
Self-expression is the act of cultivating, harnessing, and fulfilling a desire to be remembered. To leaves one’s mark. It is the need to leave a room and know we have left something behind. Whether it be the laughter of a story shared, allowing another to view an image we have snapped, the mental stimulation caused by a poem read, or even something so small as knowing we have made someone else think. In reality, making someone think is one of the most powerful tools we have in self-expression. Because it is a matter of helping another to see, to feel, or to believe what we have created or presented. To touch without touching. To arouse to conversation, action, or reaction. The sheer pleasure of reaching outside ourselves by looking within. Whether or not we see the results, we express ourselves to confirm our existence.
Telling a great story is like making the perfect cup of tea, it is an art. In photography there are images that move us and there are pictures that capture our eye for a moment but its affect is fleeting. To make a lasting mark is to be memorable and that is the goal combined with the artistry of the shot. A photo without a narrative is like a candle without a wick. Without the means to burn a candle loses its greatest strength. Even the simplest of images, such as a flower on a stone must tell a story or it will be viewed for the moment and not thought of again ~ no impact. Without that spark the photo is lost.
We remember the journey of a memorable image and we will be moved by it. We may even whisper about it to friends or send boisterous emails to sing its praise. But either way and regardless of how we share the experience, the image has placed its mark and it has been successful without ever speaking a word. Though we hear it loud and clear.
True character lies beyond the obvious. In its subtlety, the underlying story of the subject must be revealed. Often the most overlooked details speak the loudest. Listening to what my mind sees enables me to truly go with my artistic flow. What captures my eye, sparks my imagination and ties the concept together. Manipulating a narrative and constructing realities from the smallest of elements to the deepest shadows.
