Introduction: Book design and production (ebooks and print books) for large and small clients—from NYC publishers, to small presses, trade organizations, to individual self-published authors. Specializing in the creation of books, ebooks, directories, manuals, etc. If you're looking to learn to do it yourself, I teach InDesign for long documents (books, directories, manuals, etc.) and ebook (Kindle, iBooks, Kobo, etc.) HTML/CSS, as well as basic typesetting, parts of a book, and stuff like that. I love InDesign. If it were a person, I'd marry it. It's such a flexible and powerful program. I love teaching it, too, so if that's what you're looking for, please contact me. I also love books and long documents: Ebooks, print books, directories, manuals, all of them, and I've been designing and producing them for about a decade. The books include both fiction and nonfiction—adult, children's, YA. In a related specialty, I also enjoy and am very good at turning raw database pulls info into professional-looking directories, and have a lot of experience doing that. Another thing I like to do is save my clients time and labor by automating their internal InDesign workflows. I've been able to reduce production labor in some cases by 80%. If you want to learn the design of posters, logos, or book covers, I am not the right person. If you want a print book or ebook created, starting with your Word or text manuscript, and ending up with beautiful press-ready PDFs and Kindle/.epub files, or you want to to learn to to it yourself, or to use InDesign for anything, at any level—very basic to very advanced—that's me. • Book design (print and ebook) • Directory production • InDesign automation • General InDesign expertise • Training: Ebooks, print books, InDesign

I have worked with Keith on a number of occasions. He is smart, a determined troubleshooter, and understands the form of the book with a keen typographical eye. He will level-up your content – aesthetically, functionally, and professionally.

Keith created the ebook version of "The Complete, Annotated Secret Adversary" for the Peschel Press. He used my design of the trade paperback to create the chapter headers, making it look real sharp. It was the second ebook in my line, and he was patient with my instructions and responded to my concerns. Highly recommended.

FAQs

  • How did you get started doing this type of work?

I was a novelist who did print production as his day job. Book design was inevitable.

  • What types of customers have you worked with?

All sizes of publishing clients, from NYC publishers, to small presses, to individual self-publishing authors.

  • What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

One thing that I see people spend too much money on is changes to a book after it's gone to design. Do all that before you release your Word file to a designer. The later you make decisions, the more they cost; I've seen invoices double and triple when the client changed their mind about things that should have happened before they ever contacted a designer, so don't rush it. Make sure it's really done and you'll save a bunch of money.
