We would not recommend Sam MacCathren or his company Duraleed surfacing solutions at all. Our home project involved ~1300 sq ft of wood floor refinishing with around 300 sq ft upstairs and 1000 sq ft downstairs. The floors appeared to have a lot of scuff marks which to us were on the finish that probably the previous home owner had placed. Sam told us that they would be able to screen it out and easily refinish with water based finish. We decided to go with him and his company despite no reviews here on Thumbtack or anywhere. He told us that the project would take 2 days and asked for 50% payment at the start of the project as per his contract. Thankfully we only gave ~27% of the payment upfront not knowing what was to come. Day 1: Sam and and his coworker started upstairs. They planned to do it in 2 parts since we had furniture that could not be completely moved out of the way. So they did roughly half of the project initially. Then they moved downstairs. During the screening process they noted there was wax on our floors. Like a complete novice they spent the whole day sitting and googling how to take wax out from floors and then they left. Day 2: They came with a wax stripper and wet vaccum. They started using it on a small portion of our family room and the wax seemed to be coming out and the floor underneath beautiful but within an hour they raised there hands and said we can't do this. During that time they did an incomplete pick up of the wax from some of the areas in the family room and kitchen nook leaving them in a mess. They were running away for the day so I convinced Sam to at least finish upstairs which did not appear to have that much wax. He said he would but asked for more money. I paid him 10% more just so we could get an evenly coated top floor. They finished that job. It looks good but I would say not great for a professional with small air bubbles in some areas and small areas which were not properly screened so irregularities were left on the finish. After this rest all were phone conversations. Sam told us he was trying to find someone who could take the wax off the floors. Said all sorts of different things and 1 week later said he could not finish the job and left us in a mess. But with the two payments we had overpaid him with 37% of payment with only 23% of the job done in addition to leaving us in a mess. He promised us that he will return the balance. Multiple phone texts and calls and four weeks later he has not returned the money. During this wait period with a small scrubber, a stripper and wet vac we were able to take all the wax off and then refinish the floors ourselves. In short, this company is inexperienced and dishonest and would not recommend them for anyone's flooring needs.
