About this pro

How does your business stand out?

Have small trees on your property you don't like? Contact me to take care of them now, for less, before they become big money problems. I'm an ISA Certified Arborist® and insured. Because I don't use large-tree heavy equipment I charge less.

What do you enjoy about the work you do?

I've worked in neighborhoods poor, middle, and rich and with customers I've never met, customers that just watched, and customers that even helped out. Everyone loves a tree coming down. It's a pleasure to get rid of a headache or worry for my customers. Plus, being outside vs typing things like this at my computer? Not a hard choice.

We had a shrub that had been trimmed by a previous homeowner into some kind of spiral shape, but it had gone into disrepair. Paul took a look at the shrub and gave his suggestions for how to make it architectural again even it it wouldn't be perfect since the previous cuts weren't even. We're really happy with how he brought shape and interest to this shrub again!

Paul was great! He showed up early, reviewed the work that needed to get done and said he could actually knock it out then, even though it was 5p. He did an incredible job, cleaned up everything and even came in lower than the rate he quoted. I will definitely hire Just Small Trees again.

    Great experience, very professional
I highly recommend Paul. He is very knowledgeable in his field. He quickly and inexpensively remedied our problem with girdling roots on a tree we love and didn't want to get rid of. He wrote a thorough summary of the trees issues with recommendations for continued management. He is a hard worker and won't quit till the job is done.

    Excellent work
Paul did what was needed and all I asked. No upselling or anything. Price seem reasonable beyond my expectations so gave a tip since he stayed a bit longer than he probably expected as one of the supporting trees would not let go of the one we were trying to bring down.

Paul met today to review my project, gave me an exceptionally reasonable quote, did work same visit. He was knowledgeable about my trees, one dying and why, actually named one I had no idea what it was. Very helpful, on time, and price what I was expecting to pay. Thank you for a job well done.

Q&A

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?
Pricing is shown on my website. Trees are evaluated and priced base on these factors: tree height, trunk girth, canopy size, structures in reach, pedestrian & vehicle traffic, technical difficulty in cutting the tree down, access to the tree, and distance to a disposal facility. My goal with pricing is to have a consistent price for similar jobs and for each job to make money, which means I show up at your home happy to be there and leave your home tired and happy to have been there. This makes it easier to do the great work that I do.
What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
I ask for a few pictures of the trees to be emailed or submitted through my website to make sure they are in the size range I handle. Also, if the customer sends an address I can tell whether I can do downing and disposal (removal) or just downing. Many times I can reach a customer further out if he is able to dispose of the wood himself.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I'm an International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) Certified Arborist. My certification number is SO-7285A and can be looked up on their website or via my website.
How did you get started doing this type of work?
I once took care of a friend's home for a summer while he was out of the country. He said cut down as many trees as you can and I did so. Later on, I started my own plant growing business and took landscaping jobs as part of it. I always paid attention to the poor job 90% of landscapers do with trees, whether planting, mulching, or pruning and made sure I did better. I read tree books from Shigo and Jepson and the website The Garden Professors and put it all into practice. As luck would have it, I had a long-term landscape client at this time who wanted all his trees removed (that needed removing) and I was able to put the theory into practice.
What types of customers have you worked with?
I've worked with people on fixed budgets to people with likely no budgets and people in between. My understanding is my customers wanted their problem solved without any additional problems being created and that's what I've done so far and what I'll continue to do.
Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?
A recent example of my work was the removal of a 32 foot Hickory (Carya sp.) tree with a 12 inch base growing on the side of a customer's house. Not only was this tree rubbing against the flashing and shingles of the roof, it had also grown so large the fuse box for the A/C unit could no longer be opened. I downed the tree using a pole saw, ropes, and a chain saw without any property damage and gave the owner access back to their A/C unit. This job took 4.5 hours, including disposal of the tree.
What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?
Do get multiple quotes. If you have a large tree, do pay more (if you have to) for a professional that you like and that takes care of his employees by having valid workers' comp insurance. Hire American. I typically follow up with a customer once or twice if I don't hear back on a quote (you can accept or decline your quote on my website without even talking to me). There shouldn't be a high pressure sales pitch. If you want to test a company, ask them "to top" trees of yours. If they care about trees, they'll say they don't top or will strongly recommend another course of action.
What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?
If you are thinking about a tree on your property it's either doing something nice (blooming, fall color) or doing something you don't like (heavy leaf fall, debris everywhere, killing other plants with shade, has damage that is worrying you, growing in the wrong place). Most tree problems only get worse with time. A tree with heavy leaf fall will only drop more leaves as it grows bigger. A tree with string trimmer damage will get more damage unless a change is made. So if you've got a problem tree, think about what you want in 5 to 10 years for that tree. While you are at it, think about all the other trees you have on your property in the same manner.
