First off, let me say that I truly think Gavin Orr is a good guy and I'm sure there is quite a bit of jobs he can handle and I hate to have to leave this review. That being said, I don't think he had any business taking on the project he did for me. I was looking for someone to level an area for a playset and he was very responsive, came out the same day, seemed very knowledgeable and I had seen pictures of his work. This is going to be the beginning of a long story. He proposed a plan for the area to build a retaining wall on one side and bring in 10 tons of clean sand, and slope the other sides to save money. The entire area was supposed to be 22 x 18 and the wall was supposed to be level with the ground in the front and kind of "seemlessly" transition into the ground. I thought and had read that playset areas should always be dug out as opposed to built up. But his plan seemed good and I trusted his professional opinion so I went with his plan. First off, I do take some responsibility for accepting this plan, but after talking to several other landscapers and the playset company the plan he proposed should not have been what we did. So hindsight is 20-20, but this isn't that route that should have been taken and I wasn't the professional here that should know right from wrong. As for the actual work. He came when he said he would. Built the wall and brought in sand. I also asked him to.put landscaping fabric under the sand to stop grass from growing and he did that. It looked pretty level, but the area was about 4 feet less deep then he proposed, so it didn't have that smooth transition I wanted. The wall was 4 feet shorter and didn't step down or go even with the ground. I think he ran out of blocks. There were also a ton of rocks is the sand. (He actually did clean them out when he came back.. read on to see why he came back). Overall it didn't really thrill me, but I told myself it was what I had agreed to for the most part, I could live with it also thought it was relatively cheap at $1800. There was also a fair bit of damage to the lawn, some in parts he had plywood for but didn't put under and his dump truck sunk in. He said he would come back with bags of top soil to fix. I didn't think bags would be enough… he eventually fixed that and I gave him another 150 for the top soil, which we did agree to. I know there is some damage to be expected when done this work, but I think most landscapers include fixing that by default. Anyway, there was some pretty heavy rain that week, and I went out to stand on the area and sunk up to my knees. I texted him and said I didn't think it would work, he responded right away, came out to look and said that he thought we might have a drainage problem, but it was worse that he thought, so he would come out and fix it for free. Which he did do. Another reason that the area was so well head that he used the wrong fabric binder the sand so it was basically just a tarp under sand collected my water. He cut some of that away for drainage but left the rest in the middle. After he redid the drainage he had to put back some of the sand he had to move to make the drains. He packed it down and leveled only with the bucket of his loader. When he left it was clear to me it wasn't level, but he claimed there was enough area for the playset and brining in more sand wasn't in the budget.. I think he intentionally sloped the sides more for drainage, but it made the transition even worse (see bad design to start with.) But I felt bad for him, and still trusted it him it would work. So I gave him another 150 putting us at $150.. shook his hand and let him go. A few days later the playset installer came and the first thing he said was "you need to fire your landscaper". He refused to put down the playset for leveling reasons, didn't think the ground was solid in a the spots, and the landscaping tarp was sticking out all over and was barely covered so he could not dig down. He drove 1.5 hours and had no reason to not do the job. He said it was the worst he had seen, and sent pictures to his boss. I texted Gavin at this time and said they wouldn't install the set, and never got a response. I didn't think he was capable at this point of fixing it so I called two landscapers. They both said the plan was bad and to top it off pointed out the wall blocks should have been staggered but they weren't and the wall will fall. They wanted to redo the wall too but he glued all the blocks so they couldn't… so I am rolling the dice on if this wall is even going to stay up. Also the drain pipes he put in were literally pointing up.. and not long enough so they fixed those too. They also thought his lawn repair was sub par and redid that too. They also both said they could have done the job for the same price to fix it. One was 2500 and one 1950. So I ended up paying 1950 to fix his work and 2100 to him, including $150 of why do.i still feel sorry for this guy?? I feel like for 2500 I could have done this right. There was nothing I really needed he did to use so the $2100 I gave him was a total loss to. I sent him a message, thinking if he had a good heart he could refund me some money and I could sleep better at night, but he never responded. Overall I'm finally happy, cause I paid someone to come fix what he did. I think maybe he might think that he gave some one a good enough base to work with so he deserved what he got, but again the plan was flawed and it should have been taken out completely, but I didn't want to spend money too remove it so we built of what he did. Again good guy, bad plan, and mediocre work. I hate to have to do this to any one working hard to start a business, but I'm out $2100 and pretty ticked. If you read this Gavin, and want to work out a compromise financially then I'm willing to chat.
