Introduction: As an active professional singer in New York City and around the world, (Opera, Oratorio, as a soloist, as a choral singer, and as a choral conductor) I have served as a voice teacher to countless students for over 30 years. Several of my students have gone on to have active professional singing careers (classical and non-classical), including The Metropolitan Opera (where I also occasionally sing with the chorus) to non-traditional positions with Disney, pop and rock bands, and other audition/competition-based entities. I have been teacher to young students, older amateurs, and professional colleagues. I love singing, and I love helping those who also love singing to renew and improve doing what they love. Bringing my own joy for the art of vocal performance and expertise as a performer and interpreter to adults as well as younger students and even beginners helps me make a difference in the world.

I highly recommend Richard Lippold as an instructor who combines natural teaching ability with many years of experience and knowledge of his craft. He is both artistically sensitive and pragmatic, which makes for inspiring and exciting lessons that are efficiently run, balancing excellent technical work with heartfelt artistic exploration. Mr. Lippold is both honest and kind - in my case, some “tough love” was needed in order to get me to the next level in my singing, and it was offered with a spirit of total support and encouragement. In this positive atmosphere, I was soon able to apply Mr. Lippold’s advice and bring my artistry to a much more confident, honest, and effective space.

I have been a colleague of Richard's for about 10 years. About 6 years ago, I was having major struggles with my voice. I went to Richard to help me work through these problems. We started from scratch. Through the entire process, Richard was extremely patient. I never felt judged and always felt supported. I left each voice lesson feeling better about my voice, which is a rare feeling for me after a voice lesson. He is direct in expressing his ideas, which helps the singer easily translate them into singing. Plus, he's an outstanding person! I highly recommend Richard for a singer at any level, amateur or professional.

I needed Richard to get me from “0 to 60” in a very small window of time in order to, not only prepare for an audition, but to actually help with orchestration of the audition self-taping itself. He went above and beyond with the actual vocal work, time, effort and support- even went so far as to provide a friend to do lighting, taping and editing. His expertise in technique and vocal production raised my woefully-ill prepared voice, due to a damaged vocal chord, to a state of readiness that I would not have believed possible, and his kindness and support raised my low self esteem considerably. I cannot recommend him enough.

FAQs

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?
Lessons are $80 per hour. I do prefer this format, but can consider cases where a 1/2 hour ($50) or 45 minutes ($65) may be more appropriate.
What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
It is best to have a quick phone call or email exchange to discuss all the particulars, then a preliminary lesson is scheduled to see whether all parties are comfortable, and to see if I am the right fit for you or your young student.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
In addition to my education, a Bachelors of Music in Vocal Performance from Pacific Lutheran University, as well as a having my tuition paid as a Graduate Teaching Assistant (teaching voice and conducting) at Portland State University, in Grad school, I have been both an active professional singer and a voice teacher for over 30 years. I have also been very fortunate to study voice lessons myself with several exceptional teachers.
