FAQs
- How did you get started doing this type of work?
I took sewing for many years in middle school and high school. I took a lot of private classes and researched books and magazines to learn new techniques. I continued to sew for myself and family through college and after I was married. First I sewed things for babies and their rooms and needs. Then, graduated to clothes and costumes all the while creating projects for my home, others homes and useful gift presents. I made lots of home decor and still do. I then made wedding attire for my daughters when they got married and now I've gone full circle and make things for my grandchildren. I like to incorporate my sewing ability with my love of crafting which lends itself to many creative projects.
- Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?
I recently designed, sewed and used a glued and executed everything to create a room for a four year old girl. We created a princess room based on the fabric that she wanted on her bed. The comforter we created was pink, gray and white. We found fabrics that incorporated those colors in different small prints and solids. We used over 60 small sewn tubes of fabric which were threaded over flexible wires. Each tube was then twisted and hot glued and placed into a drilled hole in a long painted wooden board to make make a very unique wiggly valance. It was playful, unique and brought the color scheme onto the window area. We made a very unusual hanging hideout canopy area that looked like a large flower with a green tube cover that hid the cord for a lamp that hung from the middle of the flower canopy. I made pillows for the bed and inside the little reading cave. We painted the wall behind the bed, pink, to match the color in the comforter and put small silver/gray stenciled stars in a random pattern on the pink background. We center a large silver glittered letter "A" in the center of the stared wall. We picked out art work to go with the girl theme and created a coordinating "makeup" area to make her feel grown up. Overall, she was so happy and excited with her new grown up room and it was fun to design and make most of the features. It took about 3 weeks to accomplish.
- What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?
Depending on your level of experience and your goals , you need to find a compatible teacher. You need to look for someone who is patient especially if you are a beginner. Find someone who listens to your goals and can teach you the skills needed to accomplish them. They need to set up a flexible plan that is comfortable for you. You need to feel that it's ok to ask questions and that no question is a stupid question. They need to keep classes and a reasonable pace not too slow or fast.
