Tom Shelton is a highly honorable and solid professional. On top of that, he is a kind, caring, and generous man. I had a tax problem and I messaged him for an appointment time and price estimate...and you know what?...He text me back and forth for about 15 minutes giving me FREE tax advice, and then on top of that he asked me to call him so we could chat for a little while to see if we could get to the bottom of my problem. I called, and we talked for at least another 20 minutes and Mr. Shelton came up with a variety of very useful tax tips and excellent advice on how I could move forward with my problem. I offered to mail him a check but he graciously refused. When I get the final results of following his advice, and if I end up collecting about a $4300 tax refund because of his free advice, I will be mailing Mr. Shelton a nice little reward for his time (whether he likes it or not, smiling). What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
I must learn the basics of what the new client does and what they need from me. As I learn their business I can better provide what they need and when possible also what they want (when those two things might differ).
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I working at a local CPA firm for about 5 years before moving into industry. My time in public accounting exposed me to many different situations and gave me great experience.
How did you get started doing this type of work?
Took an accounting class my senior year in high school because i needed to fill an hour in my class schedule and I liked the teacher who was teaching it. i quickly realized that accounting fit my personality and I enjoyed the way everything fit together nicely. By the end of the class I had decided that I was going to get my degree in Accounting when I went to ETSU.
