- What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
I have the student hit a few balls, maybe a dozen; just letting them relax and warm up. Then we engage in conversation around their current golf swing - I encourage the student to tell me what they are trying to do in order to produce good shots [which will serve to engage the student in the deeper conversations to follow]. Then I hit a few balls to demonstrate an effectively tension-free repeatable swing that consistently strikes the ball in such a way that it flies to the target on the proper trajectory. Then we talk about some of the differences between our swings. With a big picture view in place, then the details can be addressed in context. The first detail we dive into is the interaction between the club face and the ball - we cover the face-ball interaction that tends to result from their swing, and how that interaction affects the ball's flight. [Misunderstanding impact is the core misconception at the root of uncovering the illusions of the golf swing - and getting our intentions in line with the realities of impact. I wrote a series of Vlog [articles with video] as the Head Coach and Contributor to the MyGolfingStore website which you may wish to read; "A Thinking-Free [Timing-Free] Golf Swing Comes From Really Knowing And Embracing The Realities [Versus The Illusions] Of The Golf Swing"] Then we cover the club face-ball interaction that is produced by my swing and the associated ball flight results. At this point, it often becomes self-evident to the student what swing changes will be needed in order to get the club face to interact with the ball in a way that will produce the ball flight results they desire. Then I introduce training drills to begin making those changes. After going through the above steps, the student really sees the solid reasoning behind the changes we are seeking to make and is therefore more receptive to those efforts even though they will often need to make movements that go against their intuition. You see, I'll never ask you to do anything that is more athletically difficult than what you are otherwise inclined to do - the new movements will be different, but not difficult. My teaching approach gets real results for real golfers of all kinds; my approach includes: > helping students to clearly understand and perform the counter-intuitive movements that are required to get the ball-striking results they seek. > using athletic movements the student is already familiar with and relating how those movements apply to the golf swing. > using simple examples of physical law that everyone is familiar with, and relating how physical law applies to the golf swing in a way that makes the swing nearly effortless/tension-free to produce consistently solid ball-striking. > working with the student to find the right blend of techniques so they can develop a swing that fits their abilities.
- What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
As you'll see from my "How did you get started..." response, I started teaching professionally at 16 years old and started playing golf at 10 years old. Over the last several decades I've hit what at least feels like a "million" golf balls with seemingly about every approach to hitting a ball. And I've viewed and organized/archived 100s of hours of golf instruction video. After all of that trial-and-error and study and thought and sweat, I've arrived at a place of deep understanding of what works and what doesn't work. This is how I arrived at following the ball-striking techniques and teaching approach of Peter Croker, PGA-Australia; Peter won 20 PGA tournaments in Australia in his prime and teaches his technique through on-line academies. I describe my lesson discount offer in the "Your Introduction" section - contact me and I'll send you my affiliate link. And, as you can see from my highly positive [and in some cases even heart-felt] client Reviews, my passion has translated into the ability to help golfers at all levels and ages to improve and enjoy golf at a more meaningful level.
