Custom Masonry Specialists, GA's reply
We appreciate the opportunity to respond to reviews in circumstances like these. This customer’s name and review is false as it was posted by an Atlanta based handyman, Ed Gurley, operating under the name Brookhaven Handyman. After reviewing the project needs with both Ed and his client we decided to proceed as it was inline with our customary offerings and we enjoyed the client and her home. During the project, the Handyman Ed was dismissed by the client due to many reasons. Given that we were subcontracted with him, we had to work with him on receiving payment once the job was complete. Ed disappeared leaving us without payment and few options to proceed. When searching public records for this contractor we only found falsehoods and dead ends. We believe this review is a result of our investigation and revelation of his fraudulent acts. The client was beyond impressed with our services and we are happy to provide potential and future clients with her contact information to verify our work. Please know that Thumbtack values their review platform and it is rare for a review to be removed. Allowing responses from the Pro is how we are able to provide future clients with insights into each reviewed project. We are thankful for this opportunity. Best, CMS

Custom Masonry Specialists, GA's reply
Ted - thank you for your review. CMS appreciates the opportunity to partner in your masonry repair needs. We value customer feedback and use it in the continuous building of our company. I would like to provide further insight into your comments. Regarding timing, when project timing was discussed it was determined that we would put you on the schedule to be completed by a repair crew upon next availability. A fluid time frame of one week was provided. The job was completed within the given time period. While we had hoped for Tuesday, the previous job required further attention allowing for your completion on Friday. Communication was open and we informed you of the delay. There were no problems on the clients end during this time. When the scope of work was complete, a conversation between client and CMS owner was had and approval on a job well done was received. Unfortunately the completion of job confusion lies with a comment that was made by an employee for an additional cleaning outside of the scope of work. We do recognize the need to deliver on the employee commitment and will be doing so within the next week of this review response. Thank you for bringing it to our attention.

These guys are awesome. Called them out to fix a previous contractor's work and they responded immediately and worked through the weekend to fix the shoddy brick work. The end result was amazing and I even had other people comment on it. I will be hiring them again and highly recommend them.

FAQs

  • What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

Owner and Project Superintendent, David Ostlund, has over 32 years experience in the construction industry. He has earned the title of Master Mason from the Georgia Masonry Association. David ranks 11th nationally from his participation in the National Block Laying competition where he received his gold trowel.

  • How did you get started doing this type of work?

'A jack of all trades, a master of none.' David wanted to ensure that while he knew many trades, he mastered one - Masonry. Growing up in the industry he had access to all facets of construction. David had a passion for geometry and put that to work through building with bricks, block and stonework. Over time he has mastered his trade while broadening it to include speciality projects such as water features, fireplaces and chimneys and other outdoor hardscapes.

  • What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

'Communication is key' and 'you get what you pay for.' It is vital for clients and providers to have open communication. In our business it is the contractors responsibility to bring to life a clients vision while sticking to many rules, codes and regulations. An understanding of wants and needs and managing of expectations is imperative. The ole' saying goes, 'you get what you pay for.' This is applicable to the Masonry industry in many forms. Make sure your plans are up to code and the job is being carried out to specifications. Also, Masonry is very detail oriented and rushed work can reflect flaws and result in long term structural damage.
