Introduction: I have over thirty years experience in the fence business. I have intentionally remained a small company where I sell and install all of my own jobs. I have worked for larger North Shore companies in the past and have seen the poor quality of work that is associated with high volume. Many large companies will send out a salesman.
If he sells the job, it is given to a work crew or independent subcontractor who the salesman may never even speak with, to review your job. Due to the seasonality of the business (many employees are laid off for months every winter) and typically low hourly pay, it is extremely difficult to retain good employees. Often subcontractors are used who are being payed much less than they make on their own jobs. This often results in poor quality work. People often ask me to refer another contractor. I always suggest that they go with someone who is doing the work themselves so that they can meet, and decide if they are comfortable with, the person who will be doing the work.
I enjoy working outside and the intense physical aspect of the work. I enjoy knowing that I have control over the quality of the work and will not be pressured by my employer to accept poor quality.
