FAQs
- What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?
I customize each price quote based on the document's length, condition, and deadline. My baseline rate for academic editing is 0.03/word, and my baseline rate for narrative nonfiction (e.g. personal statements, cover letters) is 0.06/word. If you're a full-time graduate student, we can negotiate a volume discount for longer papers. For resumes, I offer both standard editing and career consulting services, so we can discuss your career goals and maximize your resume's effectiveness.
- What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
My first goal is to learn more about your editing needs. The more you can tell me about your document's goals and intended audience, the better I can edit it! We can have those conversations here on Thumbtack or via email. I strongly prefer to work in Microsoft Word format, since it has better formatting tools, including Track Changes. When the edits are done, I'll email you one file with all my changes tracked as well as a clean copy integrating my edits.
- What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
My academic degrees are all in English: I got my BA from University of Illinois in 2006, my MA from Ohio State in 2008, and my PhD from Ohio State in 2017. I also launched my editing business in 2006. Since I taught writing & literature throughout graduate school, I've learned a lot about how to use rhetoric effectively and appropriately, especially in academic and professional contexts. More recently, I've benefited greatly from my interactions with other editors in the Editorial Freelancers Association, the American Copy Editors Society, and the Editors' Association of Earth.
