Introduction: I have been playing the viola for 16 years, and the violin for 23 years. I graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Music Performance from Utah State University in 2012, and am currently a second-year graduate student at the University of Utah, in pursuit of a Master's Degree in Viola Performance and Violin/Viola Pedagogy. I have studied with members of the Fry Street Quartet, Utah Symphony, Houston Symphony, and more. I am currently the principal violist of the University of Utah's Utah Philharmonia, and a member of the Michie Graduate String Quartet. I love what I do, and I am thankful for the privilege to spread goodness in the world through music! Performing in large and small ensembles has taught me how to collaborate with people of all walks of life. Teaching gives me the opportunity to connect with amazing children and adults of all ages, and presents the unique challenge of adjusting my teaching style to suit the learning styles of all different kinds of students!

Mallory Todd has been one of my favorite viola teachers overall. She brought me out of the not-really-practicing rut that I was in, gave me beautiful music choices that I still revisit and appreciate, and taught me how to do vibrato (no small feat!). Her lessons were challenging, but never terrifying, and her teaching style made me want to approach the viola eagerly instead of dread practicing. I had an absolutely wonderful learning experience with Mallory.

I found out about Mallory Todd from the Summerhays Music teacher list and what interested me in taking lessons from her was finding out she has a Bachelor’s Degree in Viola Performance and she is pursuing a Masters degree in Music Performance and Pedagogy at the U of U. She also has a lot of performance experience. She is very good at her craft. She likes and can teach you different styles of music, ranging from classical, fiddling, jazz, to modern. I am one of her adult students and have enjoyed learning from her very much. She is very clear during lessons on how to practice at home so you can improve and become more proficient at Viola/Violin and this helps me to improve each week. She is professional, punctual, and her lessons are worth every penny. She is a wonderful teacher and I would recommend her to anyone!

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?
The first lesson is always free! My rates are $80/month for 30 minutes; $120/month for 45 minutes; and $160/month for 60 minutes. Discounts will be given to siblings/family members who take consecutive lesson times. I will travel, if my schedule allows, to your home. A reasonable travel fee will apply per month.
What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
I typically use the Suzuki method to start, and depending on the student, I may supplement with other methods or pieces of music as needed. It is important to tailor the teaching style to the individual.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a Bachelor's Degree in Viola Performance from Utah State University, studying with Brad Ottesen and the Fry Street Quartet. I studied with Rita Porfiris at the Hartt School from 2013-2014, in pursuit of a Master's Degree, but had to take leave after the first year, due to health concerns. After two years of addressing my health, while also studying with Timothy Deighton of Penn State, I restarted my graduate program at the University of Utah in 2016, where I currently study with Julie Edwards of the Utah Symphony.
