Introduction: I provide cost effective designs, full service renovations, and in-depth color consultations for homes and office spaces. I am the exclusive Eastern distributor of the customized hand-crafted cabinets by Wittmer Kitchens, a family of Mennonite and Amish craftsman based in Indiana. They are able to build any cabinets, wall units or bathroom vanities I design with my clients. Their prices are incredibly low in light of their high value because there is no middleman-- I design the cabinets with my clients, and Wittmer Kitchens builds, delivers, and installs them. I appreciate the challenge of working on a budget to upgrade homes and offices. I love finding ways to get the best return on each dollar spent. Because I charge for my services only by the hour, my clients pay directly to my sub-contractors or stores where things are purchased so my clients enjoy my in-store discounts and receive no up-charge like many interior designers charge. I have a unique understanding of color psychology and theory, allowing you to create atmosphere and emotion through the perfect paints, fabrics, and accessories for your spaces. I have worked for almost 20 years as an interior designer and decorator on a wide range of projects, from simple color consultations, to ground-up designs on new homes and entire restaurant designs. No project is too small; no project is too large! I love to work closely with my clients to help them find or further their style. I design and decorate spaces to meet the functional needs and artistic tastes of each client. My style is adaptive to my client. I thoroughly enjoy the investigative process in finding out what will make each client pleased to be in their home. I love helping people get to a place where they love the place where they live or work!

Kim guided us to pick great colors for our whole house. We love bold colors, and she did a great job in picking up on our style and making unique suggestions that we loved. We ended up with a crazy cool red stenciled pattern on the underside of our very visible kitchen island. She also helped us pick out furniture, window treatments, and accessories for our new home. We had a tight budget, and she helped us find the biggest bang for the buck. Kim is very easy to talk to, and great at picking up on what your goals are. I would recommend her to anyone!

Kim Johnson of Kim Johnson Designs was a pure joy to work with and would highly recommend her!!! Throughout our whole-house remodel Kim helped to guide, recommend, encourage, support and educate us in an informative, experienced yet respective and completely comfortable way. She helped us to navigate the overwhelming and confusing process of a million choices by helping to uncover our desires and wishes (often unknown to us) to create a cohesive design direction that was in our style and budget. Our project included building new spaces (master bedroom suite, family room, mudroom) with an entire kitchen rebuild, as well as remodeling 3 additional bathrooms, laundry room and re-purposing existing space in 4500 sq ft house. The planning for the process was 7 months and construction 7 months, while interior design continues. Kim helped us make construction decisions during the early stages with an architect - she provided the real-world, practical, "women's-view" with architectural experience. Kim helped to confirm design decisions for all cabinetry (layout, wood choices, hardware and granite countertops) for extensive kitchen cabinets, dining room, and 4 bathrooms). Kim then directed the paint color choices for all rooms in the house and was essential in the selection of custom furniture items for new family room as well as window treatments for several rooms in the house. She also continues to make suggestions/answer questions about any area of the house whenever I ask. Working with Kim was like spending time with a dear friend, who is just as interested in your project and its success as you are (sometimes more when you are frustrated and tired of making decisions). Although she often works as a general contractor, we were working with a separate architect and contractor for the execution, yet she complimented them beautifully. She is very flexible in her arrangements and can work with anyone and any situation. Kim is very fair and reasonable. You will love working with her.

You can tell that Kim loves what she does, and is so excited to share what she knows with others. She was very good at picking up on my style, and very conscientious about designing my home to tailor fit my wants and needs. I LOVE how it turned out! I charge by the hour and do not request any time obligation from my clients. I work for you only as much as you request.
What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
Working with new clients is one of my favorite things! I I love listening and finding out what people like about their home and what they don't like and want to change. I enjoy helping them discover ways to customize, upgrade and update their home and putting those action plans on different timetables of immediate things to be done and things to be done in the near future and beyond. I love to educate and empower my clients so they can make future purchases and decisions with confidence. I listen to what my client likes about their home and what they don't, helping them identify what they want to change. Sometimes people need the aid of a professional just to "put a finger" on some missing piece or askew element that is keeping them from their ideal atmosphere. I enjoy helping people discover ways to customize, upgrade and update their home, creating a timetable of tasks for immediate action or long term goals. I love to educate and empower my clients so they can make future purchases and decisions with confidence.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have 20 years of interior design experience working with many different clients on many different projects. I taught interior design seminars and classes, most recently at George Mason University Lifelong Learning Institute, based on my two decades of experience in addition to my formal training in a wide array of industry subjects.
