I hired Dave to work on my bathroom. He installed tile flooring and painted the walls and trim. Dave was very great to deal with. He was responsive to messages and very helpful with the whole process. Dave was on time and kept to the timeline he gave me for the project. Can’t beat his prices either. I know I will be calling him again for more projects.

I'm surprised to see any negative reviews on here, as Dave has done great work for me on several occasions. I hired him to build a raised garden bed from a sketch I had drawn up. My wife and I were both very impressed with the end result. He also pruned some branches away from my roof, replaced a section of rotted siding on the house, and cleaned out 2 years worth of debris from our gutters. Honest, knowledgeable, and reliable. Sadly, not many are these days.

Dave came by to install 2 ceiling fans in my house. He arrived late saying he was at the wrong address even though I provided my address and phone number. He began the project by disconnecting the light fixture and assessed that he needed a part he did not have. Left for a trip to Lowes. Came back and began to place the brace in the ceiling. Needed another part for the project and left for Lowes again. Two trips and 4 hours later, not only was the ceiling fan not installed but he decided he couldn't put the light fixture back because he didn't want to be responsible for burning down the house. In addition, this is on the same circuit as my hallway lights and outdoor front light which now do not work either. I'm left with a safety hazard, no fans installed and no overhead light. I would seriously consider before hiring.

Details: Yes, the location has an existing light fixture • Ceiling • Less than or equal to 8 feet high

Lorraine, I am very sad to see this review, for too many reasons to mention. After ignoring my calls all day about what time to show up, I made other work plans, and blew them off when you finally got back to me at 11:00 Saturday night. Then, you ignored my calls again Sunday morning while I was on your street trying to figure out which house you lived in. Yes, I did have to go to Lowe's to purchase proper mounts for the fans, as the current light was barely supported buy an under-sized, overstuffed box, screwed into a rotten fragment of an old 1x2. Before cables going into the half inch box, where are brittle old cloth sheathed wires, some of them with grounds, and some with none. As we discussed together, you would need to bring in a licensed electrician to run some new wires to make any sort of fixture safe in that spot. I capped all the wires and stuffed them back in the new larger box I grabbed for you. I assure you, the situation is 100 times safer after I left, than it was when I got there. As I also mentioned, I am not the same as whoever hung that light to begin with...I have a consience...You have a beautiful home, I was not going to try to make connections with the 1inch of available wire that was in the box, and read about your house burning down a week later. I am sorry I didn't get your fans installed, but please tell the whole story.

FAQs

  • What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

I think the main thing people need to realize is that there are times a handyman isn't necessarily the answer. For the most part, I am referring to any serious plumbing or electrical work. I can make a toilet stop running, or even replace the toilet, but I can not re-run lines, and move that toilet to the other side of the bathroom. A handyman can swap out a light switch, or install a ceiling fan, but if you need to add a breaker, or run new wires, you're going to need to hire an electrician instead.
