Sorry this pro can’t do your job, but we know other pros who can.
Introduction: I am a cellist, educator, and occasional contractor in the tri-state area, based in Manhattan. Though classically trained at the Manhattan School of Music, I am equally comfortable performing symphonic works, chamber music, opera, musical theater, classical contemporary music, popular music arrangements, and even video game music. In the past year, I performed for NY Fashion Week, the Spoleto Festival Orchestra in Charleston, NC, collaborated with the Video Game Orchestra's "Capcom Live!", and performed in a Yiddish production of Fiddler on the Roof. Making music is my first love and I would happy to work with you in your upcoming project or event! As an educator I teach cello and piano and on occasion violin as well. It is my mission to help students achieve their personal goals with music making and to bridge gaps between people of different backgrounds through their shared passion for the arts. For younger students I aim to instill a sense of pride in quality work, strong work ethic, and comprehensive knowledge of music history and theory. Lessons are always customized to accommodate a student's learning style and meet their needs and schedule.

Vivian has been a fantastic cello teacher for my 10-year-old son. He picked up cello to join a strings program at school, but was a year behind his classmates. We wanted to get him up to speed quickly. He has ADHD and is not always the easiest to teach, but Vivian was patient and focused on helping him learn proper technique. He was frustrated at times, but she was able to bring him along and, in a few short months, he has gone from knowing very little to playing confidently with his classmates. Most important, he really looks forward to the lessons! We also took him to see Vivian play at Carnegie Hall, which blew him away. I can’t recommend her highly enough.

Details: 10 - 13 years old • 0 - 2 yrs of formal training • Yes, the student can read music • Classical • Jazz • Yes, the student has a cello • 45 minutes • The cello teacher travels to me

Vivian has been an outstanding teacher. She is in addition to being an accomplished cello player herself a natural at conveying the important information needed to learn the cello. I highly recommend anyone wanting to learn the cello learn from Vivian.

Vivian is an excellent teacher! As a strong player with many years of formal training, I really wanted someone to provide me with additional advice on keeping up my technique. I also wanted someone who is familiar with the chamber music literature, since I play chamber music with various friends/groups. Vivian has been so responsive, professional, and helpful with all of these goals! I can’t wait to keep working with her!

FAQs

  • How did you get started doing this type of work?

Music has been a part of my life since before I can remember. I began playing the piano with my mother before I could read or write and began taking cello lessons soon afterwards. Performing is and will always be my first passion. There is so much joy involved in performing; there's the excitement and spontaneity of collaborating with fellow musicians, the danger of a live performance, and the opportunity of creating a beautiful, powerful memory for yourself and your audience. My other passion is teaching. Even though many people believe that an early start is crucial to learning how to play an instrument or read music fluently, I can guarantee you that this is not the case and that you can learn a new instrument at any point in life, so long as you have the desire to learn and are willing to put in time for practice.
