Pavita Singh helped me with the final edits of my novel Acadia. She has hawk-like eyes when it comes to spotting grammatical mistakes! She has a very strong understanding of grammatical rules, knowledge how to create solid plot points, and a great sense of how to create emotional depth. She is passionate as well as knowledgeable, a perfect combination for a great editor. Her help was very much appreciated!

    About this pro

As a language lover and grammar nerd, I revel in reviewing my friends’ work, inserting Oxford commas, and eliminating redundancy. I am meticulously organized and enjoy obsessing over the details. I produce superior results with a short turnaround time. I enjoy building a rapport with my clients and taking the time to understand their unique needs. I am responsible and trustworthy and am happy to sign any NDAs or confidentiality agreements as needed. Editing provides me an often necessary recess from stressing out over my own work. During a time when I was experiencing frustration with my day job, getting together with one of my best friends every Sunday evening and helping her edit her college essays was usually the highlight of my week. As an editor, there is a certain satisfaction that comes from turning something good into something great. Reviewing other people’s writing is also an opportunity for me to learn more about them.

      Q & A

      • What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?
For copy and line editing: 1 cent per word For developmental editing: 1.25 cents per word Minimum $5 Estimates may change from initial quotes based on the amount of editing I have to do, and I try to be as upfront as possible should this be the case. I'm always willing to work within clients' budgets.
      • What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
First I try to understand exactly what they'd like to get out of their work with me. Are they looking for content editing? Copy editing? Both? I have them email me their drafts, and then I send my redlined versions back to them. We repeat this process as many times as needed until the customer is satisfied. I make it a point to stay in touch with customers even after a project is completed.
      • What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a Master in Public Health in Social & Behavioral Sciences from Yale University. I also have an undergraduate degree in Gender & Sexuality Studies, Linguistics, and Child & Adolescent Mental Health from New York University. I recently completed an apprenticeship with elephant journal in writing, editing, journalism, and social media.
