FAQs
- What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?
I generally charge about $40/hr. I prefer to tutor from my home because otherwise I have to include travel time to and from your location, which isn't a good return on your investment. Most tutoring sessions last between 45 and 90 minutes depending on the age of the student and the topic. We work at my kitchen table. Parents are more than welcome to hang out while I work with their student, either in the kitchen or around the corner in the family room. Many parents stay for the first session or two and then start using the time their student is with me to run errands. I have two cats, one of which is very friendly and often likes to curl up next to students while we work. This can make some students feel more comfortable but can also be discouraged if a student isn't comfortable with cats.
- What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
We talk a little bit ahead of time either by phone or electronically about their needs and if it feels like a good fit then we meet and I start working with a student. It generally takes no more than one or two sessions for me to figure out what the issues are for a given student and determine how to best go about overcoming their problems.
- What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have bachelors degrees from Brown University in both Materials Science and Engineering, and Psycholinguistics, and I have a masters degree in Materials Science and Engineering from WSU. I worked out at the site at PNNL for over 20 years doing both technical work on a metallurgical research program and program management. I substitute taught an algebra class for a few weeks, I helped my own kids master their high school math curricula, and I homeschooled my daughter in Latin for several years. During the time I ran the Math Olympiad for the Washington State Math Council, I contributed significantly to improving the overall quality of the test questions. And since I started tutoring several years ago, I have had positive feedback from both parents and teachers as to the improvements seen in their students' abilities.
