Sorry this pro can’t do your job, but we know other pros who can.
Introduction: I am a jazz pianist based in NYC. I recently completed my Masters in Music at New York University. Although by this point I've had extensive training, as a pianist I am fundamentally self-taught. I was recently music director for Lights Out: Nat King Cole, a sold-out performance. While my above-average ear helped me quickly grasp many theoretical concepts, I was a slower learner when it came to piano technique. Because I started late, I had to be very methodical and deliberate in the way I practiced technique. However I feel that because of this, I am better able to explain what needs to happen in order to build facility on the instrument. On top of this, I have a wealth of experience to bring to the table, which I hope to share with you and make you the best musician you can become! There is no joy for me like performing. The direct communication with an audience, that two-way street for sharing ideas, feelings and experiences for me is like no other. Teaching for me has always been an incredibly gratifying experience. There is no greater feeling for me than watching students grow and become inspired by the music they play.

I am an ex horn player who hasn't played for 50 years and is learning to play piano for rhe first time. Ryan broke down my playing by watching me play a simple scale. He started giving me great exercises to unlearn bad habits to make my fingering more efficient and ergonomic. He gave me other more advanced ideas to begin working on or at least to think differently. I feel I got good value and will progess much faster working with him than just with the internet and books. Excellent teacher.

Ryan and his assembled band (a singer + upright bass) were an incredible addition to our special day. He accommodated all of our requests, even when it was down to the week before our wedding. All in all he pulled together the trio in great time as we planned this all in short order and completely delivered! They looked great and sounded great and we heard rave reviews throughout the evening. Highly recommend Ryan for any music needs.

FAQs

  • What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

Lesson prices are based on the lesson location, whether the student is coming to me or I'm coming to them. Performance rates are determined on a case-by-case basis.

  • What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

Determine the individual needs of the customer. Every student has entirely unique sets of strengths and weaknesses that I must cater to if I'm to teach in a satisfactory manner. This will involve gauging the student's experience level within whatever style of music they want to learn how to play. Going forward I constantly look for which teaching methods work and which ones do not. For performances, I am also interested in the individual needs of the customer. I would decide how to approach the performance based on what/whom the event is for, how many people are expected, what style of music is requested, and what sized group is desired.

  • What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

I have a Masters in Music from New York University as well as a Bachelors in Music from University of North Florida. In addition to this I've studied privately with a myriad of different piano instructors. As an instructor I have 2 years experience working as an adjunct instructor at NYU, where I worked mainly with non-major undergrads. The students' experience ranged from having played their entire lives to never having touched an instrument. I feel that working with both extremes helped me grow immensely as an instructor and mentor. I've been a performing musician for 10 years in many different settings, mostly jazz.
