Introduction: I'm an Ivy League grad who's available to tutor your child in algebra, my favorite subject, and it can be your child's favorite too! I started tutoring my own honors student many years ago (he's now attending San Marino HS) and liked it so much I continued tutoring other students in grades 5-12 in San Marino, South Pasadena, Alhambra, San Gabriel, Pasadena, and Arcadia.
I've always been good at math, while acing all honors/AP math classes at the elite math/sciences Stuyvesant High School in NYC, getting my engineering degree at the University of Pennsylvania, or writing computer programs/algorithms for internet companies. I enjoy solving math problems, especially algebra, and I'll do my best to impart knowledge and technique to your student so she can tackle her math homework and tests with confidence, accuracy, and speed -- and to help her become more self-sufficient and communicative with her teachers and fellow students and less reliant on tutors or parents. There's nothing better than helping a student reach that Aha! moment when a previously difficult concept finally clicks.
I'm looking forward to tutoring or providing homework help to your student in elementary math, prealgebra, algebra 1, or algebra 2, in your home, at a public space, or online. My rate starts at $45/hour payable by cash or check. I have a 24 hr cancellation policy, i.e. the session fee may be charged if no or less than 24 hr notice is given.
Here's a little bit about my approach to tutoring & mentoring. . .
Work with what you're given. Bring all available resources to bear on the problem or circumstances to achieve your goal. It's the premise for homework and success in life, and it's what I try to impart to students I tutor and/or mentor.
As applied to solving a math problem, students need to identify the relevant subject area, gather/reference the pertinent math principles and formulas, and determine which application and sequence of formulas and equations will lead to the derivation of unknowns from known data. Once a student sees and practices the pertinent combinations for each problem type, it "clicks" and math homework is no longer an insurmountable burden but a series of fun puzzles to be solved.
For good homework and test scores, students need more than knowledge of how to solve the problems. They also need accuracy and speed. Both these elements are achieved thru practice and learning/practicing the right habits while completing their work. Sometimes a teacher will want problems completed in a certain way, so students will need to understand that approach and convey it to any tutor they work with.
But it's not just about the assignment/test scores, it's about the final grade. No self-respecting student wants to be a kiss-ass, but they need to influence their teachers in such a way to gain their favorable opinion to subtly, if not overtly, sway them when making critical judgements about their grade. It's important to show teachers your respect, gratitude, and the quality of student you are. Help them understand it's a confident and right decision to lean in your favor than against. I work with students (and their parents) to develop their people/soft skills and walk the path to successfully influencing others.
But it's not just about school grades or the college you get in, it's ultimately about gaining life skills, i.e. your toolbox of resources, and inner determination/attitude that will carry you forward to success/fulfillment in any endeavor and despite any circumstances life may throw at you. So, yeah, you're not just working on your math homework/grade, you're practicing fundamental life skills.
And it will be my honor and pleasure to help and guide you.
