Introduction: I am a professional Artist specializing in creating beautiful murals, paintings, and illustrations. I have been an Artist for over 15 years! I am a member of the Society of Children’s Books Illustrators and create lovely illustrations in digital media using my iPad Pro and Apple pencil. I have done several live painting events, including a holiday pop-up mural at Sea-Tac airport for HMS Host, which was featured on King 5 news. My paintings have been exhibited at Gray Sky Gallery and A/NT Gallery in Seattle. I organized and taught an outdoor watercolor sketching class series.

Have you ever wondered how amazing works of art just appear on a wall you’ve never even noticed before? I chose to find out what exactly goes into making mural, so I made one. I had seen murals in the city when I was driving around, but I never knew exactly how much work was needed before even prepping the wall. Just to clarify, what I did was a mural, and not graffiti. Although I did use a little spray paint, that has nothing to do with whether it was graffiti or not. Graffiti is vandalism, and is unwanted by whoever’s wall is it is put on. Generally, murals are commissioned by a client who wants to make their wall look interesting. In my case, I was the one who went to my ‘client’ in this situation. I have been drawing on and off since I was in about second grade. I usually draw in graphite, with a sketchy style of drawing. One of the reasons I chose this as my project, was because It was more finalized, and it had color. I’ve always wanted to make a finished piece of some sort, but never really knew exactly how. This project allowed me to make something permanent , it gave me a chance to put myself out there and show off my art. Originally I wanted to do a large painting of some sort, but my teacher gave me the idea to paint the mural, and I thought that was a much better idea. It worked better in a project format than I think the painting would have, and I learned things about marketing myself as well, not just about art. When I started looking for mentors, I was looking in the school community, but I eventually branched out and found accomplished local muralists online. I created an email with the help of my parents, and sent it out to various muralists I found online. I got a lot more responses than I thought I would. Everyone I emailed responded, and a surprising number of people said they would mentor me, including my mentor, Tamara Hergert. Looking back on it, I am extremely lucky my mentor said yes, as she is very busy with her projects. Normally she would have said no, but she liked the way my email was written (thanks mom and dad), and she was in a good mood. My mentor is (obviously) a muralist but she has a lot of experience with digital art as well, before she became a muralist, she made digital art, and she makes her sketches digitally. Tamara gets five star reviews because she does whatever she can to make her clients idea real and never lets her artist ego get in the way of what her client wants. The first time I met my mentor was when we actually did the mural. Our relationship was less of face to face and more emailing and skype. Even though she did live in Washington, like I said, she is really busy, so it would have been very hard for her to meet me in person every month or so. During the duration of the project, I think the hardest thing I did, was coming up with ideas. It’s one thing to just draw whatever comes into my head, and entirely another to make my ideas more or less easily paintable. I’m not saying the other steps weren’t hard, this was just the most difficult. I also had to plan, plan, and plan, from timing to materials, to proposing. The school let me use the wall of the sports shed as my wall. I wanted to do a cityscape, but the school wanted me to do a more sports themed mural. Luckily Jeremy, a parent of a kid in my class had a wall available for me. In the end, I chose to paint on Jeremy’s wall, for two reasons, because I didn’t particularly see how my mural, or any mural could be done easily on the wooden slats of the shed wall(Jeremy’s wall was flat, and interior) , and also because I didn’t want to redo my whole sketch. Even though I didn’t end up painting on the shed, I am still thankful that that option was offered to me, the more options, the more backup plans if things go wrong. On of the joys I had while doing my project, was finally making my sketch! I had already made a few sketches but after testing my favorite, I found that it wouldn’t work with paint, so I made my final sketch. It turned out that the sketch wasn’t really that necessary anyway, because my sketch was pretty versatile. The buildings didn’t have to be exactly where I made them in the sketch, and so on. The reason my sketch was allowed to be so versatile, was that Jeremy wasn’t picky at all, with what got put on his wall. Which was really nice, because it allowed for some necessary last minute changes. Like changing my sketch. I was totally not anticipating the amount of time that would be needed to be put into this project, but I guess it wouldn’t be a project if there was no obstacles, or if it took only short amount of time. It really made me think about murals, and things in general, if something this small, took this amount of work, I wonder how much work other, more important things take. I’m always told to not procrastinate, to get things done. But this project is where that advice really ‘hit home’. I learned that murals don’t just pop onto a wall, like it seems they do, and that it takes months to get it on a wall. From sketching, to proposing, the real bulk of making a mural is not the actuall painting, but the time, and thought and planning put in to make a good mural. In fact, the actuall painting, is often the easiest part. Overall, I had a great time with this project, and this all would not have been possible without my wonderful mentor, Tamara Hergert. I really learned a lot from her, from the best of them. I think that this was a great experience that will greatly help me on my way to doing murals professionally (if I so choose) I got the opportunity to learn from an amazing artist. I now know tips and tricks and strategies for getting the most out of a sketch, different materials to buy, different details to consider when proposing a mural and many other things that won’t just help me if I want to make murals for a living, but in many other aspects of my future career, whatever that may be.

Each mural project is unique and priced individually, based the level of detail and square footage of the mural. Price per square foot may range from $10 up to $50, depending on the level of detail and painting style.
What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
My process is simple: 1) I help you crystallize your vision for the project by asking questions and listening to your ideas. 2) Then, I send you a free project cost estimate, based on the information you have provided. 3) If you are on board, we select dates, set deadlines, and sign a Project Agreement that I send you. 4) The next step is exciting! I get to work on creating a sketch for your project, so you can see what it will look like. I tweak and revise the sketch, based on your comments. When the sketch is finalized, we are pretty much half way there, as we both are super excited and can’t wait for me to get started on the wall and transform the space! 5) Then, I come over to create the mural! Yay!!!! I work fast, and on average it takes 3 days to create a mural. 6) The project is complete! That’s when you are so happy with the result that you can't wait to share pictures with your friends and family! 7) I am so incredibly thankful to you for choosing me to bring your vision to life and for taking the time to leave a review for me.
