- What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
My first goal is to understand each student's musical/educational background, and then move forward depending on the best instructional method for the learner. Beginning students will usually progress through Essential Elements book 1 and Suzuki book 1 before progressing to a more personalized selection of repertoire, depending on the learning goals of the student. Intermediate and advanced students would first prepare a short piece and scale showcasing their abilities, from which we would progress depending on the technical, musical, or developmental needs of the student. When I’m performing for events, I like to understand the general vibe and aesthetic of the event, as well as any other cultural or significant information that would inform music choice. I always appreciate when a client has a few pieces of music chosen that they want to include or a performing group that I could use as some sort of inspiration for planning a set list.
- What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a Bachelors of Music in Viola Performance from Kennesaw State University (Kennesaw, GA), an Arizona Teaching Certification valid through 2030, Georgia Teaching Certification through 2025, and I have a Masters of Music in Viola Performance at the University of Arizona. I currently teach full time at Holy Innocents’ Episcopal School in Atlanta, GA. Previously, I taught in the Flowing Wells School District as Director of Orchestras and Guitar in Tucson, AZ. While I was working on my undergraduate degree, I taught private violin and viola lessons through retailers such as Ken Stanton Music (GA), large group viola and violin lessons through the Cobb County School District, as well as freelanced as a performer in musicals, operas, holiday performances, and weddings. I have also worked as a professional music librarian with the Georgia Symphony Orchestra, GSO Chorus, and Georgia Youth Symphony Orchestras, as well as managing a wedding entertainment business that hired professional musicians for weddings and events throughout the greater-Atlanta area.
